The Toyota Fortuner and Tata Nexon are two hugely popular SUV models in the Indian market, and belong to two entirely different segments and price points. You can, in fact, buy at least three Nexons with the money that you pay for a Fortuner. The Toyota SUV also commands a lot of respect in our market. The Nexon, on the other hand, is known for its sturdy build, crashworthiness and high safety rating. In a recent accident, a Nexon crashed into a Fortuner, and the results were rather interesting. A video from the place shows the aftermath and the damage that was inflicted on both SUVs.

It opens by showing the Fortuner being moved from the crash site using a tow truck. This seems to be the case of a high-speed head-on collision. The crash has damaged the Fortuner's front fascia completely. The bumper has been completely damaged, the hood heavily dented and headlamps broken down. The impact could be contained within the engine bay. The A pillar and the entire cabin is seen intact. The occupants should be safe as well.

Next, we see the Nexon. This Indian SUV is famous for its solid build quality. Despite it being a head-on collision with a much larger SUV, the Nexon took relatively less damage. The front bumper, bonnet, headlights, and fenders were all destroyed in the crash.

Just like the Fortuner, this Nexon managed to keep the impact limited to the engine bay. The cabin and all the pillars can be seen intact and completely unaffected. This vehicle may not be in a state to drive away, but its occupants would have walked out of the debris effortlessly.

The video has been amassing comments and viewership. Most people praise the Nexon for its sturdy build, which even 'outscored' that of an SUV which costs thrice as much, to some extent.

The Crash Test Ratings

ASEAN NCAP had crash tested the Toyota Fortuner in 2020. The SUV performed well in the same and earned an overall five-star rating. It was awarded five star rating for both adult and child occupant protection. In adult occupant protection (AOP), it scored 34.03 out of 36 points. In Child Occupant Protection (COP), the score was 43.38 out of 49. The overall scores stood at 87.46 points.

This was, in fact, the second ASEAN NCAP evaluation of the Fortuner. The first was conducted in 2016. It is interesting to note that Bharat NCAP hasn't explicitly conducted crash tests of the Fortuner. However, the protocols and criteria used by both Bharat NCAP and ASEAN NCAP have a lot in common. Thus, the ASEAN NCAP rating can make much sense in the Indian context too.

Now, consider the case of the Nexon. Both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP have crash-tested the Nexon. In both cases, it scored a full five-star safety rating.

The Bharat NCAP crash test commenced in October 2024.The vehicle scored 5-star ratings in both AOP and COP. The scores stood at 29.41/32 and 43.83/49 respectively. The tested variant of the Nexon had safety features like six airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, rear parking sensors and hill hold control.

The Global NCAP crash tests took place in 2018. The SUV scored 32.22/34 in adult occupant protection and 44.52/49 in child occupant protection (more than what it scored in BNCAP crash tests). Both these results show the sheer strength and safety offered by the Nexon.

Over the years we have seen many real-world examples of the same- multiple incidents in which the car saved lives!
