It isn’t uncommon in India to find heavy vehicles, buses in particular with air horns that are loud to unsafe levels. Even though the law has prohibited the use of these on public carriages and more importantly, on public roads, many continue to use loud horns. Cops continue to do vigilante missions to bust the use of air horns. A recent video shows a Karnataka policeman punishing bus drivers in a way that has sparked discussions on the internet. He made these drivers listen to the loud horns of their own vehicles.

The Context:

In Karnataka, bus drivers are rather aggressive in the way they drive. Call it deadlines or unprecedented confidence, these aggressive runs often cause accidents and crashes. Even worse, these drivers are aggressive with honking too. They flaunt their loud horns every now and then, and the same causes a nuisance to those around.

In slow-moving scenarios, buses can be seen honking endlessly. As per Indian regulations, the horns used on vehicles should be homologated and adhere to set guidelines and regulations.

The Punishment:

The policeman here decided to teach these drivers a lesson by making them listen to their horns. The uniformed cop made the bus drivers kneel down before their buses and listen to the shrilling horns. The cop was apparently trying to make the drivers aware of the nuisance created by unnecessary honking. The initiative seemed to have worked out as the drivers were all convinced that the horns were loud and annoying.

Netizens React:

The video has had immense traction on social media. It has also sparked active discussions and raised diverse opinions from netizens. A lot of them lauded the cop’s act of punishing the drivers. They consider it as a “Perfect treatment for honking“.

Although this is inhumane, I appreciate the police for doing this“, commented someone. Many further remarked that similar harsh methods should be used on other vehicles too.

A user commented, “Should do same with bike silencer too“. Noise pollution caused by loud two-wheeler exhausts isn’t small. The cops should implement measures to control these as well.

The act of exposing the drivers to loud horns at such close proximities could sound inhumane, but it could help in making them aware of the noise pollution on Indian roads. ‘Creative and impactful measures such as this could address the noise pollution issues‘- says a lot of netizens.

The incident seems to be from Bangalore city. A user commented ‘Fantastic initiative @blrcitytraffic. Pls depute yr team near every school & hospital and there will be a marked difference in noise pollution.’ Several other comments also speak about the same.

Another interesting comment reads ‘Similar treatment must be given to road building contractors, MLAs MPs by making them travel in roads filled with potholes in peak Bengaluru traffic, treatment should be same for all‘.

Why Is Honking Dangerous?
