The craze for SUVs in India as well as globally is going up. While most of us are moving towards SUVs, only a few of them actually own an SUV. Many of them are going for crossovers that are getting marketed as SUVs. It is great for use in the urban jungle. However, a small portion of these customers go for 4x4 SUVs too. Even though many buy 4x4s, not many know how to use this feature. If you feel you are one among them, here we have a video from a Mahindra Thar Roxx owner showing how to use 4x4 properly.

The video has been shared by Mechanical Jugaadu on his YouTube channel. In this video, the owner of the Mahindra Thar Roxx talks about the 4x4 transfer case, when to use it and how to use it. He starts the video by explaining the situations when one would need to use the 4L and 4H.

He mentions that if you are driving the car on a levelled road or tarmac, you don’t have to worry about the 4H and 2L. The car by default is engaged in 2H which is the 2 wheel drive mode. It is only when you come across obstacles or situations that you have to use these features.

The Roxx owner first shows how to slot the car to 4H and 4L. The 4H can be engaged even when the car is in motion but, it is always a good idea to stop the vehicle and then engage. If you want to engage 4L, the car has to be in neutral. After this, the 4x4 knob has to be pressed and the pulled down to engage 4L.

When both 4L and 4H get engaged, a notification light will glow on the instrument cluster. The 4H is used at places where the car is losing traction and want to climb up with momentum. You can engage the diff lock in this mode to ensure that the power is sent to all wheels evenly.

The benefit of 4H is that the car can be driven at speed which is not too slow. This way the driver can approach obstacles with momentum. Never drive a car with 4H engaged on road as it would damage the components of the transfer case.

In 4L, things are slightly different. The traction control is turned off automatically. This is actually good as you don’t want the traction to cut the power when you are trying to go over an obstacle. In this mode, the RPM is locked at 1000 and won’t go over it.

In 4L, the all the torque is available from low RPM and the driver doesn’t even have to push the accelerator. The SUV can actually crawl up the obstacles in this mode. This is usually used in extreme off-roading where the car needs torque to clear and obstacle.

In the video, the owner even shows how the Thar Roxx performed in each of these modes. Once you are done with off-roading ensure that you come back to 2H mode to ensure that the car doesn’t face any issues while driving on road.
