5 Crore Porsche 911 Catches Fire And Burns Down During Karnataka Car Rally [Video]
Seeing a vintage Porsche is a sight that is not very common. However, what is even more rare is seeing one completely burnt to the ground. Recently, a saddening video clip showing a burning vintage 1978 Porsche 911 Safari has been shared online. As per the reports, this particular Porsche 911 Safari, which was worth Rs 5 crore, overheated on a slope near Hampi and soon after, it immediately caught on fire. It was taking part in the Explore Karnataka Historic Drive 2024.
The video of the 1978 Porsche 911 burning on the road has been shared on Instagram by Hospet.Online on their page. In this short clip, we can note that the silver-colored Porsche 911 Safari’s rear portion was engulfed in flames. As mentioned above, the vehicle was going up a slope when it overheated.
Unfortunately, these old Porsches did not come with better cooling systems, and due to this, it immediately caught on fire. Thankfully, a couple who were inside the vehicle quickly stepped out before it completely burned down.

What’s even more heart-wrenching is that this particular 1978 Porsche 911 Safari was worth Rs 5 crore. It was a very rare vehicle, and most likely, there are no more similar examples in India at the moment.
It was equipped with a set of auxiliary lights on the bonnet, a roof carrier with a spare tyre on top, a raised suspension, and a reinforced chassis to take the abuse during off-road driving.
Where did it burn?
As stated above, this particular 1978 Porsche 911 Safari was participating in the Explore Karnataka Historic Drive 2024. It is a vintage car rally, and this year, there were a total of 40 cars from India as well as from abroad. Reportedly, this incident took place at 9 AM near Hampi.
Not the first Porsche to burn
Although a Porsche 911 burning is very rare, it is not something unheard of. A year ago, a case of a Guards Red Porsche 911 crashing into a tree and then catching on fire and burning down was shared online.
What happened was an alleged drunk man was driving this expensive Porsche 911 supercar at a very high speed. Unfortunately, due to the uncontrollable speed and lack of consciousness, the driver, as stated, crashed into a tree. This incident took place around 4 AM on Golf Course Road in Gurugram.
Locals stated that the impact of the crash was very loud, and soon after the car caught fire, they called the fire department. As per the reports, this Porsche was registered in Chandigarh and was on its way to Sikandarpur when this accident took place.
A while ago in Hyderabad, Telangana, a Porsche 911 also caught on fire after an accident. It was reported that this particular Porsche 911 from the 997 generation was being driven at 250 kmph on wet roads. Unfortunately but expectedly, the driver lost control and crashed, after which the car caught on fire.
Back in 2015, billionaire Yohan Poonawalla’s Porsche Cayenne Turbo also burned in the middle of a road. It was reported that Poonawalla was very angry at Porsche for selling him a vehicle with manufacturing defects.
