Flyover passing through a residential balcony

The video showing and talking about this bizarre flyover construction in Nagpur has been shared on X by Drishti Sharma Mulak on their page. In this short video clip, we can note that there is a curved flyover and its beam which passes through the balcony of a home. This balcony is located on the first floor of this home.

In the video, the reporter can be seen raising concerns over this awkward construction. It has been mentioned that if in the future there is debris or any other issue with the flyover, the residents of this home could get in trouble. She also asked the question about who approved the construction of this flyover passing through a balcony.

Where is this flyover located?

This particular flyover is the Indora Chowk–Dighori Chowk elevated flyover (NH-353D). It spans across 8.9 km and this corridor is being constructed to improve the traffic flow inside the city of Nagpur. Presently, the construction has not finished.

What have the authorities said?

Soon after this flyover construction caught the attention of media and it became viral, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) issued a formal notice to the residents involved. They have also initiated an inquiry into the legality of this structure without sanctioned plans. This particular home belongs to the Patre family, who runs a small business from the ground floor of this home.

As per Ganesh Rathod, Assistant Commissioner of NMC’s Gandhibagh Zone, the property falls under a notified slim area. It requires a 15-day notice for any demolition action to take place. He added that the document verification process is underway and illegal construction, if confirmed, will be addressed accordingly.

How did this situation arise?

A year ago in October 2024, NHAI’s project director formally wrote to NMC raising the concern that there are 2–3 shops which are obstructing the rotary outer beam. The letter also highlighted that there is an urgent need to clear encroachment to avoid delays in construction.

However, despite these requests and some warnings, NMC failed to take any remedial actions, and due to this, the construction proceeded without resolving the land dispute. CM Sinha, General Manager and Project Director at NHAI, clarified that the road would not pass through the house but along the inner ring road. He assured that there is no danger to residents.

The perspective of the family owning the house

One of the family members of the house over which this flyover passes, Srushti Patre, has shared the family's perspective on this fiasco. She stated that they had been informed about the 1.5-metre balcony extension, but they did not object because the road itself is not in their living space.

She added that it is just a beam passing through and the road will be above it. Patre also stated that they understood the need for adjustments or removal which may take place in the future. Other family members have expressed their frustration over the viral attention and have stated that the problem has been exaggerated and they are willing to cooperate.

The National Highways Authority of India has shared a response to the viral video. It stated, “Regarding the recent visuals circulating on social media about the Indora–Dighori Flyover at Ashok Chowk, Nagpur, it is clarified that during the construction stage, NHAI identified the encroachment and formally requested @ngpnmc for necessary removal action. NMC has also verified that the house structure in question was built without any sanctioned building plan.”
