Is This the New Tata Sumo? Fact vs Fiction!

Tata Sumo was an iconic MUV that was offered in the Indian market for more than two decades. This MUV was discontinued in 2019 as part of stricter emission and safety norms. Since its discontinuation, we have been seeing images and reports on several YouTube channels about the Sumo making a comeback. Is it actually true? Is Tata bringing back the Sumo? Let’s find out.
The simple answer to this question is No. The images circulating on the internet are either created by talented render artists or AI. The first image seen in this story is actually designed in such a manner that many people might mistake it for an official release from Tata Motors.
We see the Tata Motors logo in the top left-hand corner of the image. The SUV shown here is actually a Chinese SUV—BAIC Jishi 01. This is a large SUV that looks heavily inspired by the Land Rover Defender. Whoever created this render image replaced the original car logo with Tata’s. The same modification is seen at the rear as well. The spare wheel cover also features a Tata logo, and the creator even placed a "Tata Sumo" badge on the registration plate area to grab viewers' attention.
The next video in this story also contains a rendered image, which we believe is AI-generated. Just like the first image, the YouTuber claims this to be the 2025 Tata Sumo, suggesting that it would look almost like this. However, the design shown doesn't resemble anything we have seen in the Indian market so far.
In most of these videos, YouTubers claim that the SUV will be launched at an attractive price. Many viewers who watch such videos are unaware of these tricks and often believe what the person in the video says.
Tata Sumo was an MUV and one of the early models from the Indian manufacturer. It had a ladder-on-frame chassis and was a highly utilitarian vehicle, which was one of the main reasons for its popularity.
We believe the Sumo is not coming back—at least not in 2025—because Tata has not made any announcements about it. There has been no official confirmation or statement from the brand. If you look at Tata’s current lineup, you’ll notice that there isn't a single SUV or crossover using a ladder-on-frame construction. We don’t think Tata will invest in a ladder-on-frame vehicle, especially when the entire market is shifting towards monocoque frames.
Other issue is the product placement. Tata already has Nexon, Curvv, Harrier and Safari in their SUV line up. If they launch the Sumo, positioning is going to be a bit difficult as customers have always associated the Sumo brand as a not so expensive, value for money product. If they launch it, the Sumo will be expensive and that might actually do more bad for the brand than good.
As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding its return. Tata is currently focusing on its upcoming products, which mostly consist of EVs. Even if Tata decides to bring back the Sumo name, the vehicle will be entirely different from its discontinued version.
There is even a possibility that Tata might reintroduce the Sumo as an EV, as they have recently been reviving the names of their old models due to their cult following—examples include the Sierra and Safari.
In short, do not believe such images blindly. Always verify reports from trusted sources or official websites to avoid confusion.
