The Mahindra Thar was a big hit in India when it came out in 2020. It has a strong build, powerful engines, and is great for off-road adventures. But the 3-door version was not practical for everyone. To fix this, Mahindra is launching the Thar 5-Door, possibly named the Thar Armada, in 2024. Here’s what to expect.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door (Armada): Launch Date, Price, and Features

New Design and Size

The biggest change is that it has two extra doors, making it easier to get to the back seats. The Thar Armada is now longer, giving more room inside. It is 4,800 mm long, 1,855mm wide, and 1,895mm high. The front keeps the Thar’s famous 7-slat grille and round LED headlights, but the Armada will have a new grille design with a horizontal line and LED headlights from the factory. The side will have vertically mounted door handles on the C-pillar and bigger 19-inch alloy wheels.

Better for Daily Use

The Mahindra Thar Armada is now better for family use while still being great for off-road adventures. The front seats are just as comfortable, but the longer body provides more space for passengers in the back. The Armada now has a proper middle row bench seat, which is comfortable. New features include automatic climate control, rear AC vents, fast charging USB ports, and rear seat armrests.

The boot space has increased a lot, making it more family-friendly. Other new comforts include automatic headlights/wipers, cruise control, and a panoramic sunroof, which many buyers want.

Powerful Engines

The Mahindra Thar Armada will have three engine options. The first is the same 1.5-liter diesel engine found in the 3-door Thar RWD, producing around 117 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. The second option is a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine from the Scorpio-N, which produces 172 to 175 bhp and up to 400 Nm of torque. A 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine will also be available, with power specs around 200 to 203 bhp and 370 to 380 Nm of torque.

Both manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions will be offered. To keep the price low, Mahindra will also offer the Thar Armada with a choice between 4WD and 2WD layouts.

Modern Interior

The dashboard of the Thar Armada has been updated. It now has a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and has built-in navigation. Other features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, multiple airbags, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and a panoramic sunroof. The interior will also offer different color themes and roof-mounted speakers.

For safety, it has dual airbags, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard. Higher models will have side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control, and tire pressure monitoring.

Expected Prices and Competitors

The Mahindra Thar Armada is expected to be available in the second half of 2024. Prices are likely to start at around Rs. 15 lakh for base RWD variants and could go up to Rs. 30 lakh for top-of-the-line 4WD variants. It will compete with midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and the newly launched Force Gurkha 5-door.

Pros and Cons of the 2024 Mahindra Thar 5-Door

Pros

Iconic Styling: Keeps the classic design of the 3-door Thar with added practicality.

Roomy Cabin: More space for passengers and easier access to the back seats.

Off-road Capabilities: Strong off-road features like 4WD and high ground clearance.

Well-Equipped Interior: Modern features like a digital display and smartphone connectivity.

Powerful Performance: Multiple engine options provide exciting performance.

Cons

Reduced Breakover Angle: The longer body makes it harder to climb steep hills without scraping.

Increased Weight: The larger size adds weight, which can affect off-road performance.

Retro Styling: The classic design may not appeal to everyone.

Expensive Top Models: Higher trims with more features can be costly.

Unknown Reliability: As a new model, its long-term durability is yet to be proven.
