Volkswagen India has launched the all-new Tiguan R Line in the country at Rs 48.99 lakh, ex-showroom. This is a noticeable premium of about 10 lakh, over the previous generation Tiguan's Rs 38.17 lakh (ex-showroom, India) price. The R-Line has become the most powerful and premium model in Volkswagen's India lineup. Deliveries are expected to start from 23rd April, 2025.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said, “With the launch of the all-new Tiguan R-Line today, we are entering an exciting phase for Volkswagen in India, a phase that embodies the future of premium mobility from Volkswagen. This iconic SUVW along with being bold and dynamic is also modern, fully equipped and highly capable to handle all terrains. Developed with German–engineered DNA, 5-star safety and fun-to-drive dynamics, the all-new Tiguan R-Line is here to thrill.”

A Closer Look At The Tiguan R Line

The R-Line packs enough to differentiate itself from the Tiguan that was previously on sale here. It gets a completely new design. The front now features a bolder and more imposing look. The LED DRLs, headlights and glass-covered horizontal strip are all new. You also get to see multiple R-Line badges on the SUV. The actual grille sits on the lower part of the bumper and has large air curtains for unrestrained engine breathing. The rear gets full-width connected LED tail lamps.

The side profile stands out with its large round wheel arches and R-Line-spec 19-inch alloy wheels. You will see a lot of resemblance here, with the previous Tiguan. The LED tail lamps have a smoked finish to them and even the rear bumper looks muscular. Making it a sweeter deal, the Tiguan R-Line is 30mm longer than the previous generation, with no change in wheelbase.

Inside, the R-Line will feature sports seats and a long list of features. The equipment array will include the likes of an ambient lighting package with three light zones and 30 colour options, 10.3-inch digital instrument display and a huge 15-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit (the largest in the segment). It runs the latest version of VW’s MIB4 software platform (the fourth-generation Modular Infotainment Toolkit), with support for Over The Air (OTA) updates. Elevating the cabin experience further, the seats get massage function and have adjustable lumbar support.

Other features include a panoramic sunroof, illuminated door handle recesses, pedals in brushed stainless steel, surround lighting with welcome light, 3-zone climate control, head up display (HUD) which will display speed and driver assistance data, Park Assist Plus, with Park Distance Control, IDA voice recognition, selectable drive modes, and dual wireless charging bays.

The manufacturer claims that the cabin layout is inspired by a completely new concept and incorporates high-quality trims and finishes. There are multiple R-Line badges inside the cabin as well. The dashboard has tasteful use of Gloss Black. The steering wheel is a flat-bottom unit. The dashboard and door panels have Black pixelated elements and ambient lighting, rendering a unique visual appeal.

The Tiguan R-Line is underpinned by the MQB EVO platform. The global-spec R Line comes with a 2.0L TSI turbocharged petrol engine that generates 265 hp. However, for India, VW has toned it down to 204hp and 320Nm. This, interestingly, is the same output as the Ameo Cup cars! To give you more context, the Tiguan that was on sale here, used to produce 190hp.

The 2.0L engine now comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and there is All Wheel Drive (AWD) offered as well. Volkswagen has refused to bring the hybrid petrol (both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid) and the new-age diesel engines to the Indian market. These are available globally.

On the safety front, the Tiguan R-Line gets 9 airbags, ADAS Level 2, ESC, electric parking brake, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist, and hill descent control. All four wheels get disc brakes as well.
