The electric vehicle market in 2025 has shaped into a contest mainly between Tata Motors and MG Motor. Together, the two manufacturers claimed all five spots in the year’s best-selling EV list. The MG Windsor EV led the chart with 19,394 units sold, followed by three Tata models and another MG to complete the top five.

MG Windsor EV Takes the Lead

Launched in September 2024, the Windsor EV has quickly moved to the top. It became the best-selling EV for nine of the last twelve months, showing that its demand has been consistent.

The model is priced at Rs 12 lakh under the Battery-as-a-Service scheme, which separates battery cost from the vehicle’s upfront price. It comes with a 52.9 kWh battery that delivers a 449 km range. This mix of affordability and usable range has helped it find buyers in both cities and semi-urban markets.

In May 2025 alone, Windsor sales reached 3,939 units, an 8% rise from the previous month. By March 2025, cumulative production had already crossed 15,000 units, pointing to steady output and delivery.

Tata’s Multi-Model Line-up

Tata Motors placed three models in the top five: Punch EV in second place with 17,966 units, Tiago EV in third with 17,145 units, and Nexon EV in fourth with 13,978 units.

The Punch EV’s success reflects demand for compact SUVs. Offered with 25 kWh and 35 kWh batteries, it can deliver up to 421 km of range. Its family-friendly design and safety record have worked in its favour.

The Tiago EV has found strong traction in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. It appeals to cost-sensitive buyers looking to try electric mobility at a relatively low entry point. Sales touched 5,250 units in August 2025, showing 11% year-on-year growth, though monthly numbers have fluctuated.

The Nexon EV, once the clear market leader, still holds relevance. August 2025 sales stood at 14,004 units, a 14% year-on-year increase. Available with 30 kWh and 40.5 kWh battery packs offering up to 465 km range, it continues to be Tata’s best-selling single model. Competition from the Windsor EV has, however, pushed it down the order.

MG Comet EV in the Top Five

The MG Comet EV rounded out the list with 10,149 units sold. Designed as a city commuter, its compact size, 230 km range, and affordable pricing have appealed to young buyers and those seeking a second vehicle for daily use.

Sales in August 2025 reached 1,113 units, an 18% increase from the previous month. The Comet has proven that there is room in the market for ultra-compact EVs focused only on city driving.

Market Concentration

Total EV sales across all manufacturers touched 115,716 units in fiscal 2025. The top five accounted for nearly 60% of that volume, showing how concentrated the market has become around a few strong performers.

Tata Motors continues to lead in total numbers due to its multiple models. Apart from its top three, it has newer products like the Curvv EV, which recorded 7,534 units, and the Harrier EV, which is slowly building a base in the premium segment.

MG, on the other hand, has relied on fewer models. Its approach of positioning the Windsor in the family EV segment and the Comet in the urban EV space has paid off.

Premium EVs Still Struggling

Beyond these, premium EVs remain small in volume. The Mahindra XEV 9e registered 5,422 units, while the Hyundai Creta Electric sold 3,617 units since its launch in January 2025. These numbers show that mainstream adoption is still concentrated in affordable, value-driven products.

Buyers appear more focused on range, charging ease, and ownership cost than on luxury features or brand appeal. This explains why the Windsor EV and Punch EV have performed better than more expensive entries.

Two Strategies, Same Goal

The 2025 rankings highlight how two companies are taking different paths to the same outcome. Tata has built scale through a wide portfolio, while MG has targeted specific buyer groups with fewer models. Both approaches have worked, leaving little room for rivals.

With the Windsor EV, Comet EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV, and Nexon EV dominating the list, the market shows that affordability, usable range, and availability are the deciding factors for EV buyers in India today.
