The third-generation Renault Duster has been spotted testing on Bengaluru roads, marking the French carmaker’s big return to the midsize SUV market. The camouflaged test mule reveals several changes tailored for India, showing Renault’s intent to challenge established rivals in a crowded segment.

Tougher Look With India-Ready Tweaks

Spy images highlight updates made with local buyers in mind. The grille gets bolder chrome work, and the Y-shaped LED DRLs now flow neatly into the grille. Bigger alloys and higher ground clearance hint at tuning for rougher Indian roads, while the squared arches keep the familiar Duster stance.

The rear is noticeably sharper. Y-shaped LED tail lamps, a chunkier bumper, and a sportier spoiler set it apart from the global model. Renault clearly wants the new Duster to stand out in a segment where styling often drives purchase decisions.

Turbo Power With a Hybrid Twist

Under the bonnet, the Duster is expected to use the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine making about 156 hp and 254 Nm. Already proven in Indian conditions (in the first-gen Duster), this engine brings enough punch for highway use. Renault may also add a mild-hybrid option to ease running costs, a move that could appeal to price-sensitive buyers.

Cabin Goes Digital

Inside, the transformation is obvious. A large 10.1-inch touchscreen dominates the centre console, paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Quality levels look improved, tackling one of the old Duster’s weakest points.

Rear AC vents, Type-C chargers, and a six-speaker sound setup make the cabin feel more in step with rivals. The layout follows Renault’s latest global design language but is tailored to Indian expectations of comfort and practicality.

Safety Steps Up

The new Duster looks set to shed its “basic but tough” tag with a strong safety kit. Six airbags, electronic stability control, and ADAS features like lane keep assist and emergency braking are expected. Connectivity features including wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will also be standard, putting it level with key competitors.

Pricing Could Shake Up Segment

Reports suggest an entry price near Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) but Renault is likely to offer more equipment with a feature-rich package at different price levels. With midsize SUVs now routinely touching Rs 20 lakh for higher trims, Renault could tap into buyers looking for better value without losing out on equipment.

Production is likely to begin by late 2025 at Renault’s Chennai plant, with a launch in early 2026. The SUV will share its platform with an upcoming Nissan model, allowing both brands to spread costs and achieve economies of scale. This alliance could help Renault price the Duster more aggressively.

Market Ripe for a Comeback

Midsize SUV sales top 40,000 units a month, but high prices have left space for an affordable yet well-equipped alternative. The Duster name still carries weight, thanks to its reputation for comfort and durability. If Renault combines this legacy with new-age features and competitive pricing, the SUV could carve out space once again.
