Off-roading is an adventure sport, and there are several SUV owner groups in different parts of the country that arrange experience drives for SUV owners. These events allow participants to showcase their driving skills and the capabilities of their vehicles. It is a group activity, and one should never go alone for such drives for various reasons. Here, we have a video where owners of 27 4×4 SUVs found themselves stuck on a hill after deciding to drive off-road. The vehicles later had to be rescued with assistance from authorities.

The video has been circulating on various social media platforms. According to the video, the incident took place in the Idukki district of Kerala. A group of 40 tourists, said to be from Karnataka, was visiting the hill station. They were traveling in 4×4 SUVs and decided to drive up a hill in Idukki to showcase their driving skills.

Little did they know that it was going to be a challenging experience. The group drove around 27 vehicles uphill. There are tracks or mud trails where the SUVs can be driven up. However, as the group started driving up, it began raining, changing the surroundings completely. With 27 SUVs, the track was completely damaged, and the SUVs started losing traction on the slippery track.

The tourists did not expect this to happen. They tried driving the cars down, but that was also not possible. They were now stuck on the hill with 27 vehicles. The group decided to leave the vehicles on the hill. Some of these vehicles had to be tied to a tree or another vehicle to prevent them from slipping away.

After reaching down, they asked locals for help, but they couldn’t do much as it was raining. The tourists were then taken to a nearby resort, and arrangements were made to make them comfortable. Locals had informed the Motor Vehicles Department about this incident. The officials reached the spot the next day and inspected the vehicles.

27 SUVs stuck on hill

There are several spots in Idukki where off-roading is not allowed due to its dangerous nature. It seems the tourists were driving on one such hill. The officer later brought in a backhoe loader to clear the trail so that they could drive the vehicles down. The SUVs had completely destroyed the tracks, which was another reason they were unable to drive down.

Once the track was cleared, the SUVs were driven down one at a time. The reports went viral, and the Idukki district collector has asked the Tehsildar for an explanation regarding this matter. Additionally, the Superintendent of Police in Idukki district told the media that strict action would be taken against the tourists who drove their cars up the hill, which was declared a no-trekking or restricted zone.

The tourists were probably too confident about their vehicles. Ideally, they should have asked locals for help or guidance before driving up. They were completely unaware of the terrain and the weather.

All these factors should be considered before driving off-road in an unfamiliar place. Most parts of Kerala are receiving rain even in July, making off-roading extremely challenging. Even if the vehicle is equipped with the right equipment, it might not help in such situations.
