A number of automakers in India have started offering their popular models with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS features. This revolutionary safety tech has been designed to avoid accidents on public roads as the car is able to help the driver in mitigating the risks of accidents. However, a number of people in the country have been seen misusing this safety feature. Because of this irrational behavior, many people are now questioning the existence of ADAS. So we thought we can bring all the pros and cons of ADAS and let you decide for yourself if you think ADAS is worth it or not.

Cons of ADAS

Let’s first start off with the cons of ADAS. One of the biggest issues with ADAS in India is the overreliance on this system. This leads to complacency among drivers. When drivers become overly dependent on ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist, they become less attentive and engaged in the driving process. And because of this, the result in delayed reactions or even accidents when the system encounters unexpected situations or malfunctions. Over the last few months, we have seen numerous such instances online where people have misused ADAS as well. Most of these people were misusing ADAS to gain popularity on social media. Following are some of the instances where people were seen doing stupid stuff while letting their vehicles be completely driven by ADAS:

Sitting on the passenger seat facing backward

In this particular video, a man was seen sitting with his legs up and his hands on his phone while facing the rear side in a Mahindra XUV700. Meanwhile, the vehicle was being driven entirely by ADAS and it appears that the speed was also decent.

Person sitting in the third row while the car drives itself

Another stupid Mahindra XUV700 owner was seen doing something even more crazy. This particular man was sitting on the third row of his XUV700 while the middle seat was completely flat. He was even wearing a blanket showing how cozy he was feeling while his XUV700 was being driven by ADAS.

Man sleeps in middle seat while ADAS controls the car

Continuing the trend of stupidity, recently another person was seen sleeping in the middle seat of his XUV700 while the car was being driven by ADAS on a national highway. The passenger who was recording the video shows that the driver’s seat was completely empty and the driver himself was sleeping very peacefully in the middle row.

Drivers playing Ludo and eating a burger

In another video which was shared online, two different Mahindra XUV700 owners were seen promoting their idiotic behavior on the internet. One of the drivers was seen sitting with both his legs on the seat and facing towards the passenger seat and playing Ludo. Meanwhile, another person in a different XUV700 was seen eating a burger using both his hands on the steering wheel.

If you thought that we are done with the videos of misuse of ADAS then you are wrong. Another video was shared online in which a Mahindra XUV700 driver was seen with his legs completely stretched over the passenger side dashboard. As the car was being driven by ADAS the passenger on the left was seen being uncomfortable and requesting the driver to drive the car himself but he was busy sleeping the entire time.

Pros of ADAS

Now with all the different videos seen above you might be thinking that what’s the point of ADAS if it is only being misused. Well, the answer is that there are a number of pros of ADAS as well. For those who may not be aware, ADAS utilizes sensors, cameras, and other advanced technologies to detect potential hazards, alert drivers to dangers, and even intervene in critical situations to prevent accidents. For example, features like automatic emergency braking can significantly reduce the risk of rear-end collisions by applying the brakes if the system detects an imminent collision. Additionally, lane departure warning systems can help prevent accidents caused by drifting out of lanes unintentionally. Now if you don’t believe if ADAS is helpful then here are some instances where ADAS helped in saving people.

Volvo Truck AEB

In this scenario, a Volvo truck’s autonomous emergency braking system came into action when two students hastily crossed the road in front of it. The system immediately halted the truck, averting a potential tragedy with minimal drama. This showcased the effectiveness of emergency braking technology in preventing pedestrian accidents, particularly involving children.

Mahindra XUV700 AEB

A Mahindra XUV700’s video was also shared online where it was seen activating its emergency brakes after the vehicle ahead suddenly slowed down. Despite the driver’s distraction, the ADAS intervened and prevented a collision, highlighting the system’s capacity to mitigate human error and ensure safe driving conditions.

Hyundai Verna AEB

In this instance, a Hyundai Verna sedan utilizes its automatic emergency braking system to avoid a rear-end collision. The system detected the sudden braking of the vehicle in front and it immediately applied its brakes. This then helped in preventing an accident and showcased the ADAS’s ability to respond to abrupt changes in traffic conditions.

MG Astor AEB

Another incident from India showcased an MG Astor activating its autonomous emergency braking system to avoid colliding with the vehicle ahead. However, unfortunately in this video, it gets rear-ended by another vehicle. This highlights a potential drawback of ADAS systems, where sudden braking may surprise drivers behind, leading to rear-end collisions.

Tesla Model 3 AEB

A video from the United States of America was shared online which showed a Tesla Model 3 detecting an oncoming vehicle at a junction with malfunctioning traffic lights. The Tesla autonomously applied brakes to prevent a T-bone collision. This also showcased the advanced capabilities of ADAS in navigating complex traffic scenarios and enhancing overall road safety.
