Anand Mahindra: Tata Motors Our Respected Elder Brother!

When we think of the top indigenous automakers, the two names that come directly to our minds are Mahindra Automotive and Tata Motors. Both of these carmakers have come a long way and have been competing in the same segments for a very long time. Recently, Mahindra Automotive has managed to take the third spot on the list of top-selling car brands in India. However, despite this achievement, the humble chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, has acknowledged that he sees Tata Motors as his “respected elder brother.”
Yes, you heard that right, the Mahindra Group chief, Anand Mahindra, himself has called Tata Motors “a respected elder brother.” Recently, he shared a post on X in which he stated, “The only race worth winning is the one you race against yourself; against your OWN aspirations.”
He then added that Mahindra Automotive has always seen Tata as a respected elder brother. The billionaire chairman also highlighted that Tata Motors has always spurred them to improve their brand and the quality of the vehicles they produce.
Anand Mahindra also mentioned that he hopes they do the same for Tata Motors. In his post, he stated, “And we hope that we too, motivate them to reach new heights. The journey will always have twists and turns, but we continue to travel together…”
This post from Anand Mahindra came after it was announced that his company managed to post a sales figure of 51,062 units in September of this year. Tata Motors, on the other hand, only managed to sell 42,031 units. This was a decent reduction in sales for Tata Motors, as last year in September it sold 44,809 units.
What’s even more interesting about Mahindra Automotive’s sales is that the company almost dethroned Hyundai as well. The second spot on the list is currently occupied by Hyundai Motor India Limited, which sold a total of 51,101 units. In terms of closeness, Mahindra was just 39 units behind Hyundai.
This means that if the sales figures of Mahindra continue to soar, it could most likely take over the second spot on the list of best-selling car brands in India. It should also be mentioned that when exports are included, the total sales of Mahindra SUVs total up to 52,590 units.
Many people might be wondering about the reason behind the success of Mahindra Automotive. Well, the answer to this is that the brand has been launching hit SUVs one after the other. It all started with the launch of the newest generation of Thar. The new three-door Thar became a sensation in the country.
People who were not as interested in off-roading also bought this SUV because of its appearance and presence. Following this, the brand launched the XUV700, which came loaded with a ton of features. It also offered luxury, which was not seen in most Indian SUVs.
It was then followed by the Mahindra Scorpio-N, which due to its name already had a massive presence in India. And after people saw how the quality of the exterior and interior had been improved, it became a massive hit. Even today, the waiting line for this SUV is very long.
Lastly, the newest launch from the company, the Mahindra Thar Roxx, has already garnered a significant amount of attention from buyers. This more practical version of the three-door Thar has been loaded with features. Many buyers are now seeing it as the perfect combination of a rugged off-roader and a luxury car.
Over the last few months, the sales of Tata Motors have been hit hard. This is mainly due to the reduction in sales of electric vehicles. Recently, the government of India withdrew the FAME II scheme, which earlier incentivized people to buy electric cars.
However, with this subsidy now gone, Tata Motors has struggled to sell EVs in India. Its EV sales have been falling every month, and in September, it fell to 4,680 units. This is much less than the 6,050 units it managed to achieve last year in the same month.
