After Multiple Cars Including BMW, Mercedes Fly Across Speedbreaker In Gurgaon, Authorities Act

A few days ago, we came across videos of a BMW sedan going airborne after it was driven over an unmarked speed breaker in Haryana’s Gurugram. It was not just the BMW; multiple expensive and mass-market cars drove over this speed breaker, which was built overnight, and narrowly escaped accidents. The videos of cars jumping over the speed breaker went viral, and it seems that the authorities recognized the issue and decided to take action.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has now shared a post showing that they have addressed the issue, posting images from the same spot on Golf Course Road. Recently, a viral video captured a BMW 5-Series sedan and a tipper truck jumping over the unmarked speed breaker on Golf Course Road.
The post shared by GMDA stated, “GMDA has installed cautionary signboards and marked the newly laid speed breaker on Golf Course Road with thermoplastic white paint to enhance night-time visibility and help motorists navigate the stretch safely.”
Viewers commented that the speed breaker was built overnight and that the authorities had not placed any signboard or markings on the road to inform drivers. Vehicles approaching at high speed would jump over the speed breaker, narrowly avoiding crashing into the median or damaging their vehicles.
After the video went viral, the authorities responded by initially placing temporary barricades ahead of the speed breaker. Drivers passing through the area slowed down due to the barricade and drove over the breaker slowly. However, even after the barricades were put in place, some drivers did not slow down and ended up jumping over the breaker.
The authorities have now fixed the issue entirely. They have marked the speed breaker and placed a signboard just before it. However, netizens have pointed out a few issues with this fix as well.
Some of the comments under the post include: “Thanks for painting the speed breaker and putting up a signboard, but I still feel the signboard is wrongly placed just before the bump. In this short distance, drivers would have to brake hard, which could lead to a rear-end crash. I hope you have placed another signboard much farther before the bump.”
“The marking and sign are all wrong. The sign should be at least 50 meters ahead, not just 10-15 meters. Drivers won’t have enough time to slow down, and the marking looks like a pedestrian crossing, not a speed breaker. There should be at least three signs.” “A bump on the road does not qualify as a speed breaker. You have to make it per specifications. Unfortunately, there are no rules followed when constructing speed breakers. They are particularly dangerous at night and for two-wheelers.”
A speeding vehicle can easily lose control when driven over a speed breaker on the road. The purpose of a speed breaker is to slow down vehicles to avoid crashes, not cause accidents. This can only be done if there is proper lighting and markings on the road, especially at night. Many of the speed breakers on Indian roads are not built scientifically, which often results in vehicle damage as well.
