BMW To 3.3 Lakh Car Owners: Please Park Your Cars Outside!

BMW has announced a global recall of about 331,000 vehicles due to a starter motor defect that could lead to fires. Of these, 196,355 cars are in the United States, covering models produced between 2015 and 2021. The recall also extends to about 1,469 Toyota Supras, which BMW builds under contract.
The issue is linked to water entering the starter motor and corroding its components. Over time, the corrosion can cause short circuits, which may result in the starter motor overheating and catching fire.
The problem can occur whether the car is being driven or parked. Investigations have revealed ten confirmed fire incidents so far. No injuries have been reported, but the risk of fire in enclosed spaces such as garages has raised serious safety concerns.
The recall covers some of BMW’s most popular cars, including the 2019-2022 Z4, 2019-2021 330i, 2020-2022 X3, X4, and 530i, as well as the 2021-2022 430i and the 2022 230i. The inclusion of the Toyota Supra highlights how global supply chains spread risk across different brands when one manufacturer builds cars for another.
Outside the US, about 136,000 vehicles are affected in Germany, with additional numbers spread across Europe and Asia. This global spread shows the issue lies in the design and supply of the starter motor rather than region-specific manufacturing.
While BMW India has not issued a separate recall yet, the global nature of the defect means local owners should pay attention. Many of the affected models, such as the 3 Series and X3, are sold in India, often through completely built units.
Indian customers should check with BMW dealerships to confirm whether their vehicles are covered. In a market where luxury buyers are highly sensitive to aftersales service, a delayed or unclear response could affect confidence in the brand.
With over 3.3 lakh vehicles affected worldwide, this recall is one of BMW’s biggest in recent years. The company now faces the task of repairing cars, reassuring customers, and strengthening its supply chain to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Because of the seriousness of the fire risk, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued an advisory recommending that owners park their cars outdoors and away from buildings until repairs are made. BMW dealerships will provide starter motor replacements free of charge, and in some cases battery replacements may also be necessary.
The company has said repairs will be carried out in phases depending on the availability of parts. Preliminary notifications will go out to customers from November 14, with full instructions to follow. Owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number online to confirm whether their car is part of the recall.
