BYD has crossed the 10,000 unit mark for electric car deliveries in India, a significant milestone for the brand since its first launch in late 2021. The company has grown steadily, focusing on pure electric models, starting with the e6 MPV as a commercial vehicle, then extending to private users.

BYD’s retail presence now reaches 45 showrooms, spread across 38 cities. The latest addition, a new dealership in Bhopal, is its third in Madhya Pradesh. This expands their reach in central India, making it easier for buyers who live beyond the bigger metros to consider an EV from BYD.

Why BYD’s Models Matter

Today, BYD’s sales lineup includes four models in India: Atto 3 SUV, Seal sedan, Sealion 7 SUV, and eMax 7 MPV. These cars fall between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 49 lakh, well above the country’s average car price.

The models are all battery electric vehicles, with no hybrid options offered as seen in BYD’s global markets. Atto 3 is the mainstay - it’s the most popular BYD internationally and has found its buyers here as well.

The Seal sedan is aimed at buyers wanting more luxury, while eMax 7 and Sealion 7 serve family and SUV buyers. All these models are either assembled from imported kits or brought as fully assembled units (CBU), so prices are on the higher side due to import tariffs.

Expansion via Local Partnerships

The Bhopal dealership is a partnership with SHUBH BYD and is a 4,000 square foot space designed to showcase BYD’s current lineup and let consumers experience the cars directly.

More than just a display, the space serves as a service centre and a point for new buyers to book and take delivery of cars. BYD’s strategy has been to expand wider into tier-two cities, not just focus on major urban clusters, as more families and businesses outside the main cities consider switching to electric vehicles.

Who Is Buying BYD?

Most BYD buyers are in private passenger car segments, though the e6 and later eMax 7 have also seen business use, such as employee transport in major metro regions.

With the new single-brand showrooms, BYD wants to reach individual customers in cities like Bhopal, where EV options are still limited. Dealers say local interest has grown in the past year thanks to better charging infrastructure and increased public awareness around electric cars. Some existing customers have referred friends and colleagues, boosting word-of-mouth trust.

Sales Growth and Future Models

In August 2025, BYD sold 447 cars, up 97 percent year on year. May was its best-ever month, with 530 units sold. BYD is now the fifth-largest EV manufacturer in India by retail sales, behind Tata, MG, Mahindra, and Hyundai. Tata Motors still holds the majority market share, but BYD’s numbers show steady growth in a sector that’s gaining momentum.

The next step is wider localisation. Currently, BYD assembles the Atto 3 from kits, but other models come in as CBUs. Plans for a local factory have faced regulatory hurdles, so further scaling awaits policy changes. BYD’s Atto 2, a smaller SUV, is being tested and could launch next year with a lower price point.

What Comes Next

BYD is betting on increasing volumes, not just brand presence. With 45 dealerships and the next model likely to fill a gap below Rs 20 lakh, it’s pushing toward mass-market acceptance. The company is also exploring promotions - recent campaigns include extended warranties, maintenance packages, and some accessories for buyers.

The new dealership in Bhopal is part of this plan to build a robust network. While most BYD cars remain premium-priced, wider visibility and customer service at more outlets could push the brand to greater volumes in coming years.

The milestone of 10,000 units delivered shows Indian buyers are ready to consider new energy vehicles and BYD is staying in the game with more models, wider coverage, and ongoing local expansion.
