Citroën is preparing to launch CNG-powered versions of the Basalt and AirCross, expanding its alternative fuel offerings in India. These new models follow the C3 CNG and are aimed at customers looking for economical, factory-backed options. With CNG adoption growing in several regions, the move strengthens Citroën’s position in the compact and midsize SUV space.

AirCross To Get CNG and X Trim

The AirCross will gain a CNG variant using the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Current petrol versions are priced between ₹8.62 lakh and ₹14.60 lakh, and the CNG variant is expected to carry a premium of about ₹1 lakh, consistent with the C3 CNG strategy.

Citroën will rely on its dealer-level retrofit programme, ensuring installations meet factory standards while avoiding complex line integration. The retrofit design preserves luggage space and spare wheel access, addressing a key buyer concern about CNG practicality in SUVs.

At the same time, Citroën will introduce the Aircross X, a new top trim inspired by the Basalt X. Features are expected to include ventilated front seats with dual-tone upholstery, keyless entry and start, a 360-degree camera, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the brand’s new in-car assistant “Cara” with voice control, navigation, traffic updates, and vehicle health monitoring.

Basalt CNG To Also Joins The Lineup

The Basalt coupe-SUV, recently updated with Basalt X trims, will also gain a CNG option. The 1.2-litre engine will be adapted for CNG, with a modest drop in power compared to petrol but significant savings in running costs. Reinforced suspension and recalibrated dampers will ensure the ride quality remains consistent despite the additional CNG hardware.

Offering the CNG option across several Basalt X trims will allow customers to combine coupe-SUV styling with lower fuel expenses and emissions. This addition makes the Basalt more appealing in a segment where distinctive design is often a deciding factor.

Warranty Support and Market Fit

Both the Basalt and AirCross CNG variants are expected to carry Citroën’s three-year or one-lakh kilometre warranty, the same as petrol versions. This coverage is expected to include the CNG retrofit, providing reassurance to buyers. The company’s experience with the C3 CNG, which delivers 28.1 km/kg efficiency, sets expectations for these upcoming models as well.

Citroën is saod to be targeting regions such as the NCR and Gujarat where CNG infrastructure is already strong. The AirCross CNG, with its 5+2 seating configuration, is also likely to appeal to fleet buyers. In this space it competes directly with models like the Maruti Ertiga Tour M, offering a balance of seating capacity, warranty backing, and operating savings.

Expanding Citroën’s Fuel Strategy

The addition of CNG options fits into a wider industry trend. Brands including Renault, Nissan, and Honda are also investing in factory-backed retrofit CNG programmes, giving buyers the reassurance of certified installation and warranty support.

By sticking with the familiar 1.2-litre engine, Citroën ensures servicing and parts remain straightforward across its lineup. Combined with practical integration that preserves boot space, the Basalt and AirCross CNG variants bring cost efficiency without compromising everyday usability.
