After the new government came to power in Delhi, they announced an initiative stating that all petrol and diesel vehicles that are over 15 or 10 years old respectively will be considered illegal on the road and will not be given petrol at any of the fuel pumps. The government also announced that if these vehicles are identified, they will be seized by the officials. The Delhi government has now started a drive for the same and has already seized two vehicles.

The video has been shared by ANI on their X profile. In this video, Ashok Kumar, who is a traffic inspector in the Parliament Circle, can be heard speaking to the media and saying that they have started the drive as part of the government’s latest notification.

The inspector mentioned that they have placed officers at petrol stations in the area, and if the officers spot any old vehicles, they will get in touch with the owner and check the documents. If the vehicle is over 15 years old, the officers will take further action.

These vehicles are instantly seized and taken to the nearest authorised scrapyard. The vehicle is then scrapped, and once this is done, the owner will receive the scrap value of the vehicle.

The officer seen in the video mentions that this initiative has been taken by the government to control pollution. He also states that such end-of-life vehicles often do not have proper documents like insurance and are plying on the roads illegally.

He adds that from their circle, they have seized two motorcycles that were over 15 years old. This is just from one circle, and it is expected that the total numbers are much higher across the entire national capital.

In the coming days, these drives are likely to continue. If you are a person who owns an old vehicle and do not wish to scrap it, the best thing to do is to avoid taking it out on the road. Do not park it on the roadside, as authorities may seize your vehicle from there as well.

The best option in such cases is to keep the vehicle parked inside private property or transfer it to a location outside Delhi NCR.

Apart from seizing and scrapping end-of-life vehicles, the government also has other plans to reduce pollution in the national capital. The newly sworn-in Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, has announced that from November 1, only BS-VI (Bharat Stage 6), CNG, or EV commercial vehicles will be allowed to enter the city.

The government also plans to install mist sprayers and anti-smog guns on high-rise buildings to control pollution. The Chief Minister also promised that the national capital will soon witness its first artificial rain through cloud seeding.

Coming back to the vehicles, the National Green Tribunal had already passed a ruling that limits the lifespan of diesel and petrol vehicles in the region. As per the order, any diesel vehicle over 10 years old and any petrol vehicle over 15 years old should not be driven in the Delhi NCR region, as doing so would contribute to increased pollution.
