Each and every day, we see a number of people breaking traffic laws. In most cases, we can't do anything to oppose these violations. However, people in Delhi can now earn money for reporting traffic violations. Recently, the Delhi Traffic Police launched its Traffic Prahari Application to empower the citizens of Delhi. This application enables road users to report the traffic violations of other road users in real-time for a chance to win a maximum reward of Rs 50,000.

Delhi Traffic Police’s Prahari Application

The recently relaunched Prahari app by Delhi Traffic Police was initially launched in 2015, following which it was paused, and then it had another relaunch in September of last year. Now, this time around, the authorities have rolled out this application to help law-abiding citizens in reporting law-violating citizens.

The main aim of this application is to increase road safety and its awareness amongst the public. Citizens using the Prahari application can report other road users for a number of traffic violations. These include illegal parking, driving on the wrong side, jumping red lights, dangerous or aggressive driving, unsafe overtaking, and road rage incidents.

How does the Prahari app work?

If you are someone who lives in Delhi, then you can download the Prahari application on Google Play Store (Android users) and App Store (iOS users), following which the registration has to be completed. For it, the mobile number has to be entered and then verified via OTP.

Now, in order to report a violation, the user must take clear photographs or videos of the traffic violation being committed by the other person or vehicle. Also, the timestamp and GPS location should be included for the verification of the violation. The image should then be uploaded through the app.

Following the submission, the reports are sent to the Delhi Traffic Police team for review. Each report then undergoes strict and very careful scrutiny to prevent the misuse of the application or check if the violation is false. After this, when the Traffic Police officials confirm that this violation is correct and it is validated, a fine is issued to the violator. The user in the application can also track the progress of their reports.

Reward system of the Prahari application

The main reason why the Prahari application is popular in Delhi is due to the reward system and incentives. Each month, top contributors can earn a lot of money. The first prize is Rs 50,000, and the second prize is Rs 25,000, following which the third and the fourth biggest contributors can earn up to Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.

This incentive system has been found to encourage active participation amongst Delhi residents. It also offers an extra source of income, particularly to unemployed people. What is even more interesting about this is that many citizens have now even formed WhatsApp groups to coordinate reporting efforts.

These groups have divided areas into zones to maximize the coverage of the violations. Also, some individuals have even turned this into a steady income source. Each day, 1,400–1,500 challans are issued by the authorities after successful verification. This application is helping in solving the problem of reckless driving, frequent rule violations, and lack of enforcement.
