Hyundai’s popular mid-size SUV, the Creta, is now preparing to add another feather to its cap. After dominating the petrol and diesel SUV space for years, the Creta is likely to receive a hybrid variant much earlier than anticipated.

While earlier timelines pointed to a 2027 launch alongside the next-generation model, recent developments suggest Hyundai may fast-track the introduction of the hybrid version, potentially slotting it in even before the new-gen Creta arrives.

This move signals Hyundai’s growing urgency to address the hybrid and electric shift in India, especially in the face of rising fuel prices and increasingly conscious buyers. More importantly, the success of hybrid SUVs from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota may be a factor prompting Hyundai to move faster.

Intense competition forcing Hyundai's hand

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder have gained steady traction in the hybrid space by offering significantly better fuel economy compared to their petrol-only counterparts.

Both models have proved that Indian buyers are willing to pay a premium for fuel efficiency and lower running costs, even if it means living with slightly reduced boot space and marginally slower acceleration. Hyundai seems to be taking note.

Though Hyundai has not revealed specifications officially, the Creta Hybrid is expected to borrow the powertrain from the global-spec Hyundai Kona Hybrid. This setup combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, offering a combined output of around 141 horsepower.

Such a configuration is expected to deliver excellent fuel economy without compromising too much on driving dynamics. This is likely to appeal to buyers who want to reduce their fuel bills but still enjoy the familiar performance of an internal combustion engine.

Why go hybrid?

Unlike a full EV, which comes with range anxiety and charging infrastructure challenges, a strong hybrid like the upcoming Creta offers the convenience of conventional re-fueling while still delivering meaningful fuel savings.

This middle path could resonate well with Indian buyers, especially those who are not ready to make the switch to electric vehicles just yet. For Hyundai, it’s a way to future-proof its best-selling SUV without alienating traditional customers.

The Creta hybrid will also allow Hyundai to diversify its powertrain offerings within a single model family. With petrol, diesel, and soon hybrid options, Hyundai will be able to serve a wider segment of the market. Buyers in states where diesel variants are being phased out or taxed heavily will find the hybrid Creta a compelling alternative.

From a market perspective, this development is also significant because it reflects Hyundai’s shifting strategy. Instead of waiting to roll out electrified variants with new-generation models, the company appears to be accelerating its timeline, potentially launching hybrids within the current generation's lifecycle. This is a clear acknowledgement of the pace at which the Indian market is embracing green mobility.

Creta dominance to continue?

Visually and functionally, the Creta hybrid may not differ drastically from the standard petrol version. Minor cosmetic tweaks like blue accents, hybrid badging, and perhaps revised instrument clusters could help set it apart.

But the focus will be on what lies under the bonnet and how it transforms the driving experience. If Hyundai manages to maintain a reasonable price gap between the petrol and hybrid versions, the Creta hybrid could become a default choice for city dwellers and highway cruisers alike.

In terms of localisation, Hyundai is expected to assemble the hybrid powertrain at its Tamil Nadu plant. This could help contain costs and ensure supply-chain stability. And given the fact that rivals have already set the precedent, Hyundai will likely try to match or even undercut them in terms of pricing.

Ultimately, the hybrid Creta may be arriving sooner than anyone expected. And when it does, it won’t just be another trim on the brochure. It will be Hyundai’s declaration that the future of the Indian SUV is not only electric, but also smartly hybrid.
