Big Shake Up In Indian Car Market: Mahindra, Tata BEAT Hyundai

For the longest period, the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor India Limited held the second position on the country's top-selling automakers list. However, last February, a big shake-up took place. This time around, it has been reported that Hyundai has slipped to the fourth position on this list. As for the automakers who have managed to beat Hyundai, they are none other than Mahindra Automotive and Tata Motors. Both homegrown automakers have grown their market share in the country.
This is the first time that Hyundai Motor India Limited has taken the fourth position on the country's top-selling automakers list. Last month, in February, the company managed to post a total sales volume of 38,156 units. As for its market share, it was 12.58 percent. Last year, in the same month, its sales were 47,540 units, and its market share was 14.05 percent, while its position on the list was second.
Coming to the sales of Mahindra Automotive, which has taken the second spot on this list from Hyundai, the homegrown automaker had total sales of 39,889 units. Its market share was 13.15 percent. As for the sales in February of last year, the figure was 39,725, and the market share was 11.74 percent.
Moving to the sales of Tata Motors, which has taken the third position on the list, the company has managed to post a sales figure of 38,696 units. Its market share in February of this year was 12.75 percent. Meanwhile, the sales in February of 2024 were 45,710 units, and the market share was around 13.51 percent.
As for the top-selling automaker in India, once again, Maruti Suzuki has topped the list with the biggest market share. Its total sales in February were 1,33,135. Coming to the market share of Maruti Suzuki, it has not reduced significantly. Back in 2024, its market share was 39.34 percent, and today it is at 38.94 percent.
The success of Mahindra and Tata may seem a little surprising to a lot of people. However, it has to be noted that nothing happens overnight. Both of these Indian automotive giants have been working diligently for a couple of years. They are developing new and cutting-edge models, new architectures for their cars, and also new technologies to enhance the user experience.
Apart from these, both automakers have also improved their customer service experience, dealership network, and other important aspects. What has also worked for both Tata and Mahindra are the safety ratings, as buyers in the country are now looking for safe cars. The five-star safety ratings of the cars from these brands have helped them get to the top of the sales chart.
Coming to the reason why Hyundai is losing its market share in India, the primary reason is that the company is not innovating new models or technologies. Hyundai Motor has also lost due to higher pricing. Additionally, the marketing from Hyundai is not up to par as well.
Many people have complained that the company does not provide better schemes and incentives that could boost its sales. Now, whether this drop in sales will be fixed by Hyundai next month or in the coming months is currently unknown.
