In a strategic move poised to reshape the luxury SUV market, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced plans to locally assemble its iconic Defender model in India. This shift is expected to slash prices by over ₹20 lakh, making the rugged yet refined SUV more accessible. The Defender, currently priced between ₹1.05 crore and ₹2.79 crore (ex-showroom), could see its starting price dip below ₹1 crore, potentially settling around ₹80–85 lakh after local production begins at JLR’s Pune facility.
Local Assembly Drives Affordability
The decision to assemble the Defender domestically follows JLR’s successful localisation of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which saw price reductions of up to ₹56 lakh. By avoiding steep import duties-previously 110% for completely built units (CBUs)-the company aims to replicate this strategy with the Defender.
Under India’s new free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK, import tariffs on CBUs have dropped to 10%, but assembling vehicles locally through completely knocked-down (CKD) kits remains more cost-effective, attracting just 16.5% duty.
This pricing shift positions the Defender to compete aggressively in the sub-₹1 crore luxury SUV segment, challenging rivals like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Toyota Land Cruiser. Industry analysts suggest the move could boost annual sales, building on the Defender’s existing popularity-over 5,000 units sold since its India launch, making it the top-selling vehicle in its class.

Local assembly not only reduces costs but also shortens delivery times and improves availability. For customers, this translates to a more affordable entry into the Defender’s legacy of off-road prowess and modern luxury.
