JSW MG Motor India Sales Analysis

As mentioned, the total sales posted by MG India in the month of October are 7,045 units. It also has to be noted that this sales figure is the highest ever since the company’s entry into the Indian market back in 2019. In terms of year-on-year growth, the company managed to post a growth of 37.92 percent.

Back in October of last year, the company achieved a sales tally of 5,108 units. Additionally, on a month-on-month basis, the company managed to achieve an impressive 53.55 percent growth. Sales in September of this year stood at 4,588 units. The difference between the sales in October and September 2024 is 2,457 units.

Electric vs. ICE Sales

Now coming to the main highlight of JSW MG Motor India’s October sales. The company, as stated above, has become the first automaker in India to achieve more EV sales than ICE sales. As per the company, EV sales made up 70 percent of total sales in the month of October.

Last month, prior to the launch of the MG Windsor EV, the ICE sales were at 51 percent, with EV sales making up the rest. At the moment, it is uncertain if this momentum will carry on for the rest of the fiscal year or not.

How Did MG Manage to Sell More EVs than ICE?

A number of people are interested in knowing how JSW MG Motor India has managed to achieve this feat of selling more EVs than ICE. Well, there are a few important reasons with the first one being, prior to the launch of the Windsor EV, the company had the MG ZS EV and Comet EV in its lineup.

Both of these vehicles were not able to pull in a lot of sales. However, the launch of the MG Windsor EV has helped the company a lot, as this vehicle caters to a number of different types of EV buyers. It is a feature-loaded vehicle that offers a spacious cabin and a good EV drivetrain.

Another major reason behind the sales of more electric cars than ICE cars is due to the offering of the BaaS (Battery as a Service) model. With BaaS, MG has solved the issue of higher pricing of EVs. Now EV buyers do not have to pay upfront for the battery, which increases the cost of an EV by a lot.

Also, EV buyers now do not have to worry about the maintenance and cost of replacement of their vehicle’s battery, which is another added bonus. Lastly, the launch of the Windsor EV prior to the Diwali festive season has helped MG in posting this impressive sales figure.

In fact, the recently launched Windsor was one of the biggest selling cars from JSW-MG, selling a little over 3,000 units, which is nearly half of the 7,000 odd sales that the automaker clocked in October 2024. JSW-MG Motor’s other electric cars sold in India are the Comet entry level city hatchback and the ZS mid-size electric SUV.
