Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest car manufacturer. Maruti not only sells cars in India but also exports many of these models. One of the most practical and value-for-money MPVs from Maruti in India is the Ertiga. Maruti sells this MPV not just in India but also exports it to other countries, including Africa. The Made-in-India Maruti Ertiga was recently tested by Global NCAP, and it scored a disappointing one-star rating.

The video has been shared by Global NCAP on their YouTube channel. Global NCAP conducted this crash test on the Ertiga that is sold in the African market. The Ertiga sold in Africa is actually made in India. In the video shared by Global NCAP, we see how the Ertiga performed in the crash test. The Ertiga underwent a front offset deformable barrier test at 64 km/h and a side mobile barrier test at 50 km/h.

In both these tests, Global NCAP didn’t find the build quality of the MPV up to the mark. The Ertiga tested here, as mentioned above, is made in India and comes with two frontal airbags as standard. After the test, Global NCAP rated the structure of the Ertiga as borderline unstable. Ertiga’s footwell area was rated as unstable, and pedal displacement showed injury risks to the lower legs of the driver. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection for the passenger was good, while the driver’s chest received marginal protection.

Side impact protection showed good protection for the head, pelvis, and abdomen, with adequate protection for the chest. The Ertiga does not offer side airbags even as an option. The passenger pretensioner failed to work properly. Child occupant protection was poor for the 18-month-old dummy.

The Child Restraint System (CRS) was installed in the forward-facing position, while best practice indicates a rearward-facing position offers better protection for this age group. Side impact child protection was good. The Ertiga only offers a lap belt in the rear center position, which explains the significant points loss in child occupant protection.

The passenger airbag cannot be disconnected if a rearward-facing CRS is installed in the front seat. The Ertiga offers standard ISOFIX anchorages. The norms of the crash test have changed over the years, which has brought down the score of the Ertiga. Four years ago, when Global NCAP had tested the current generation Ertiga for the Indian market, it had scored three stars.

Maruti Ertiga

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is an affordable three-row MPV sold via Arena dealerships in India. It is extremely popular among buyers in both the private and commercial segments. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is available in India with a petrol engine option only. It uses a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is used in many other Maruti cars.

It uses the new K15C series engine. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates 105 PS and 134 Nm of peak torque. Other than petrol, Maruti also offers a CNG variant of the Ertiga in the Indian market. India does not follow Global NCAP anymore, and we have Bharat NCAP set up for the same crash rating system.

Recently, a set of images leaked online, proving that the Maruti Grand Vitara scored good ratings in the crash test. We are yet to hear anything from Maruti officially about the same.
