The capital of India, Delhi, recently imposed a ban on selling fuel to 10-year-old diesel cars and 15-year-old petrol cars. Now, as a domino effect, the state of Madhya Pradesh is also considering the same ban. At the moment, this ban is under consideration. However, once finalized and implemented, these older vehicles will not be sold fuel. In addition to this, they will also not be eligible for a fitness certificate.

Madhya Pradesh also considering fuel ban for older vehicles

As per the reports, the Madhya Pradesh government is currently considering a ban on the sale of fuel to 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles. Recently, a high-level meeting was held in Madhya Pradesh regarding this new proposal. Sources have highlighted that the primary reason behind this ban is the air quality of major cities in Madhya Pradesh.

It has also been stated that older and outdated models contribute to excessive emissions. If finalized, the ban would stop fuel stations from selling fuel to private as well as commercial vehicles. Whether this proposal will pass or not has not been confirmed at the moment.

Delhi's ban on fuel for old vehicles

For those who may still not be aware of this rule, a few days ago, the Environment Minister of Delhi, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, announced that older vehicles in the national capital will not be sold fuel. The main aim of this new rule is to reduce pollution in the NCR and improve the deteriorating air quality.

To implement this rule, the government of Delhi and fuel stations will utilize AI-enabled cameras to identify if a vehicle is new enough to get fuel. These cameras will help in identifying non-compliant vehicles, verifying Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, and checking the age of the vehicle. If a fuel station does not have these AI cameras, then it will be required to install them.

As per the reports, in Delhi, there are a total of 1,00,000 end-of-life vehicles. Now, with this new rule in place, the owners of these old cars have only three options. The first one is that they can either dispose of their end-of-life vehicles or sell them outside Delhi using a No-Objection Certificate. If not the above two options, the owner will have to use public transportation or switch to electric or hybrid vehicles.

Government is putting in even more effort

In addition to the AI cameras, a team has also been formed to identify old and non-compliant vehicles. Furthermore, the government is also putting more effort into reducing air pollution in the city. Reportedly, the same team will also find out which industries are contributing to more pollution.

On top of that, the government will mandate the use of smog guns in high-rise buildings, hotels, commercial complexes, and Delhi Airport. Over the last few years, the government of Delhi has introduced many bills and proposals to phase out older cars and commercial vehicles.

Reportedly, from 2018 to 2021, 47.51 lakh “end-of-life” vehicles needed deregistration. However, only 2.98 lakh vehicles were deregistered. Now, most likely, with the new ban, more vehicles will be added to the database, and in the coming period, the government will start actively scrapping these old vehicles.
