Mahindra's bold bet on premium electric SUVs appears to be gaining serious traction, with the BE 6 posting a remarkable sales surge that doubled its monthly numbers in May 2025. The electric coupe-SUV jumped from 550 units in April to 1,206 units in May, marking a 119 percent month-on-month increase that signals growing acceptance of Mahindra's electric-origin vehicles.

This upturn comes as part of a broader success story for Mahindra's electric duo, with both the BE 6 and XEV 9e achieving their highest-ever production and dispatch numbers in May. The Chakan plant rolled out 3,692 units of these electric SUVs during the month, while dispatches to dealers reached 4,021 units, indicating strong dealer confidence and customer demand.

Breaking Through Initial Hurdles

The BE 6's May performance represents a turnaround from what appeared to be a sluggish start. After launching with much fanfare, the model saw April sales dip to 550 units from March's 934. However, May's numbers suggest that early hiccups were likely due to production constraints and a staggered rollout strategy, not lack of interest.

The phased delivery approach, beginning with premium Pack Three variants in mid-March and later introducing more affordable options, may have slowed volume initially but helped build a premium brand image. It also meant Mahindra could iron out early supply challenges while maintaining customer interest with its top-tier offerings.

Record-Breaking Milestone

The success of both electric SUVs has pushed Mahindra's cumulative five-month production and sales beyond 15,000 units. This has helped the company secure a 15 percent share of the electric passenger vehicle market in the first five months of 2025. It’s a significant feat for a brand that has only recently entered the electric SUV arena, especially when competing with early movers like Tata Motors.

The XEV 9e continues to be a major contributor, with sales rising from 2,441 units in April to 2,815 units in May. Together, BE 6 and XEV 9e have crossed the 10,000-unit mark in a little over two months of deliveries. The high dispatch numbers, over 11,000 units since launch, also indicate growing confidence among Mahindra’s dealership network.

BE 6: A Niche That’s Expanding

The BE 6 had received a good response during its launch window, though the XEV 9e appeared to attract more traction initially. Still, the coupe-style SUV has carved out a space for itself, offering a blend of design flair and strong performance. Its 79 kWh battery pack delivers a real-world range of 450 to 500 km, while acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds gives it sporty credentials that many EV buyers in the premium segment are looking for.

Unlike some rivals that rely purely on incentives or brand legacy, the BE 6 appeals through product merit. Its high-spec interior, technology stack, and differentiated design give Mahindra a competitive product that doesn’t feel like an experiment, but a serious play in a growing segment.

A Strategy That’s Starting to Click

For Mahindra, the recent numbers are more than just sales, they validate a bold pivot. The brand invested heavily in its BE and XEV electric sub-brands, set up dedicated EV production lines, and restructured its sales experience around these new-age offerings. In the early weeks post-launch, many wondered if this was too radical a departure for a company better known for rugged, diesel-powered SUVs.

Now, with solid month-on-month growth, strong dispatch numbers, and rising customer interest, the strategy is beginning to make sense. As more affordable variants hit the market and production bottlenecks ease, Mahindra may well find itself in a position to challenge Tata’s long-held dominance in the EV space.

The BE 6’s story, dipping to 550 units in April only to bounce back with more than double the sales in May shows that while Mahindra may still be relatively new to the EV game, it has the chops to take on the current crop of leaders.
