Mahindra Scorpio-N Automatic Gets More Affordable: Z4 AT Launched At Rs 17.39 Lakh

Mahindra Scorpio-N continues to witness strong demand in the country. The carmaker offers the choice of both manual and automatic transmissions on petrol and diesel variants. The automatic variants are preferred by many. Previously, only the Z6, Z8, and Z8L variants used to feature the automatic gearbox. Now, Mahindra has launched a more affordable automatic variant- the Z4 AT with an ex-showroom price of Rs 17.39 lakh.
The new variant has made the automatic transmission more accessible. It is just the base-spec Z2 variant that lacks an automatic transmission. The newly introduced Z4 AT is available with both petrol and diesel powertrains. It is the petrol that comes for 17.39 lakh. The diesel Z4 AT has an ex-showroom price of Rs 17.86 lakh.
The Z4 trim now has five powertrain options- Petrol MT, Petrol AT, Diesel 2WD MT, Diesel 2WD AT and Diesel 4WD MT. The AT, however, is available only on the 2WD variant. There is no Diesel 4WD AT on offer.
With the new AT rolling out, the prices of the automatic variants have come down by 1.05 - 1.67 lakh rupees. Previously, the Z6 was the entry point to the automatic lineup, and had an ex-showroom price of Rs 18.91 lakh.
Mahindra has based the Scorpio-N on a third-generation body-on-frame platform. Two engine options are on sale- the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (mStallion) and the 2.2L turbocharged diesel engine (mHawk).
The petrol has an output of 200 hp and 370 Nm (with MT) / 380 Nm (with AT). The diesel on the other hand, generates 172 hp and 370 Nm (with the 6MT)/ 400 Nm (with the 6AT). These apply to the higher variants alone.
The lower variants of the SUV have toned-down powertrain outputs. The diesel engine on these makes 130 hp and 300 Nm.
Should you wish to choose the four-wheel drive (4WD) variant, the Z4 (E) continues to be the only option, which is offered with a manual transmission alone. The diesel engine here delivers 175hp and 370Nm.
The Z4 variant comes with decent kit levels. It gets dual-beam halogen reflector headlamps, R17 steel wheels, sky rack finished in Black, ORVMs with integrated indicator lamps, vertically stacked LED tail lamps, a rear spoiler and skid plates.
Inside the cabin, the variant gets tilt adjustable power steering, engine start/stop, 2nd row AC, touchscreen infotainment system, wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, four-speaker audio, steering mounted audio and cruise control buttons, USB charging ports, electrically adjustable ORVMs, power windows, AC vents for the second row, rear wiper, washer and de-mister.
The variant doesn't compromise much on the safety front either. The Scorpio-N is known for its sturdy build. In addition to this, the Z4 variant comes with features like front airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold control, hill descent control, ISOFIX, 3-point seat belt for all occupants, belt pre-tensioners for the front row, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. Auto-dimming IRVM, driver drowsiness detection and tyre pressure monitoring systems are not offered though.
This variant, however, misses out on features such as ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, SONY premium audio, Alexa integration, ADRENOX connect and the sunroof.
The new variant has brought down the price bar for automatic Scorpio-Ns significantly. Automatics enjoy great acceptance in the D-segment, as they are easier to drive and more convenient to manoeuvre in the city. No gear shifts, no hassle. The Toyota Fortuner, which is often considered the prime rival to the Scorpio-N, also offers automatic transmission. The more affordable AT variant will help Mahindra sell more units of the Scorpio-N.
