ROXX Effect: Mahindra Thar 3 Door Gets Massive 1.6 Lakh Discount

The Mahindra Thar 3-door has seen a slight dip in sales after the launch of the 5-door Roxx. Many customers who were initially looking for the 3-door have shifted their interests to the Roxx, leading to a reduced demand for the smaller SUV. To boost its sales during the forthcoming festive season, Mahindra dealers have announced alluring discounts on the 3-door. In addition to dealer-level discounts, all variants now come with a complimentary accessory kit worth Rs 25,000.
The higher-spec AX variants of Thar RWD get the smallest discounts, this festive season. 1.1 lakh can be saved on these variants that are powered by a 1.5 diesel engine, mated to a manual transmission. The lower spec LX variants of RWD Thar offer discounts of up to 1.25 lakh. These include both the 1.5 diesel and base-spec petrol powertrains.
The 4WD variants also qualify for cuts. Both petrol and diesel variants of the 4WD Thar, irrespective of transmission choice, are offered with a discount of 1.25 lakh. Corporate benefits also apply to these.
In February this year, Mahindra introduced the Thar Earth Edition, with a ‘Desert Fury’ matte exterior colourway. It gets a whopping 1.55 lakh discounts during this festive season. Accessories worth 25,000 are also available on top of this. Rs 4000-5000 can be had in corporate benefits as well.
The special edition comes standard with 4WD and offers both petrol and diesel engine options, along with both automatic and manual transmissions. Key design highlights are ‘Earth Edition’ badges on the B-pillars and rear fenders, custom dune-inspired decals on the doors and silver alloy wheels.
dual-tone beige and black leatherette upholstery, special Sand dunes detailing on the headrests, dual colour AC vents, and several Dark Chrome inserts at places like the steering wheel, cupholders, gear knob, and gear console.
There are no mechanical changes on the Earth edition. It is powered by the same engine options as the regular 4WD Thar- 202L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion turbo-petrol. Both manual and 6AT automatic gearboxes are available.
The 3-door has by now, been labelled a niche product by most people, and is seen as impractical and something that demands compromises when compared to the ROXX which tends to offer the same fun and comparable capabilities, with an added sense of luxury, comfort and practicality. While you might struggle to keep the 3-door as your only car, the ROXX can easily fit in as a family vehicle that can be taken off-road as well. Finally, there is a sensible price overlapping and/or proximity between the two, giving the ROXX the upper hand it deserves.
Thanks to the recent sales slowdown, buying a Mahindra Thar has become a lot easier now. Stocks of the 3-door Thar are reported to be readily available in many dealerships and regions. It currently has little to no waiting period in most places. This is rather unusual for the model, as the Thar has always remained a hot seller with waiting spans of several months.
Even now, certain variants that are extremely popular, like the 2WD petrol and the entry-level 2WD LX diesel for example, demand waiting periods of a month or two in select locations and with certain dealers.
With the advent of the ROXX, Mahindra has implemented a rework in its monthly production numbers. Currently, the Thar brand at large has monthly production volumes of 9,500 units, at the Nashik facility. This is the combined volume of both the 3-door and the ROXX. Just 3,000 units of the 3-door alone are made every month. Having said that, Mahindra seems to be quite prepared to handle the festive season rush for the Thar.
