Mahindra has finally revealed the ARAI-certified mileage figures of the 3 door Thar’s 2.2 liter diesel and 2.0 liter petrol engines., 4 full years after the iconic SUV was introduced in India. The diesel Thar with 2.2L mHawk engine and 4×4 delivers 15.20 kmpl, while the 2.0 mStallion petrol gives 12.40 kmpl, certifies ARAI.

It has been over 4 years since Mahindra launched the outgoing generation of the (3-door) Thar in the country. The SUV enjoys stellar acceptance in the domestic market. The 3 door Thar is available in both petrol and diesel forms- with the former being powered by 2.2L diesel and the latter a 2.0L turbocharged petrol. There is also a 1.5L diesel version with RWD on sale.

The 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines in the Mahindra Thar are available with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. However, the smaller 1.5L diesel engine, which powers the Thar RWD variant, is exclusively offered with a 6-speed manual transmission.

It’s important to note that the fuel efficiency figures mentioned earlier are based on ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) tests, which are conducted under controlled, laboratory-like conditions.

These tests typically simulate an average speed of around 30 km/h and do not account for real-world driving factors such as traffic, weather conditions, driving style, or the use of the air conditioner. As a result, actual mileage figures on the road may vary significantly from the laboratory estimates. Interestingly, there is no mention of the fuel efficiency figures of the smaller 1.5L diesel engine on the RWD Thar.

2024 Mahindra Thar Prices and Rivals

The 2024 Mahindra Thar 3-Door is priced between Rs. 11.35 lakh and Rs. 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom). In terms of competition, the Thar takes on other off-road-focused SUVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha.

Additionally, the Thar’s rear-wheel-drive variants offer competition to models like the Mahindra Bolero Neo, positioning it as a versatile option in both the off-road and more budget-friendly SUV markets.

2024 Mahindra Scorpio-N Mileage

ARAI recently revealed the mileage figures of Mahindra Scorpio-N as well. The 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine on the Scorpio -N, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of 12.70 kmpl. The automatic variant of the same engine offers a slightly lower mileage of 12.12 kmpl.

For the 2.2-liter diesel engine, both the manual and automatic transmission variants share the same ARAI mileage of 15.42 kmpl. These mileage figures reflect ARAI’s lab-tested conditions and may differ from real-world driving results due to factors such as driving style, road conditions, and weather.

Though both the Thar and the Scorpio-N use the same set of petrol and diesel engines, the tuning differs between the two. These thus deliver slightly different ARAI figures for both the SUVs.

Why do these numbers matter?

The ARAI mileage figures for the Thar are particularly significant because Mahindra typically avoids disclosing these numbers at the launch of its SUVs. This is mainly because the company makes full-size SUVs with large, powerful engines that naturally tend to have lower fuel efficiencies compared to smaller vehicles. The ARAI numbers could, thus, shine light on a facet that’s talked about but isn’t supported with numbers.

Hardcore Mahindra buyers and fanbase would however, be not bothered about these mileage numbers. Mahindra is a brand that puts performance and fun-t0-drive character of the engine ahead of outright fuel efficiency, especially in its large SUVs and iconic models such as the Thar. This is something that enthusiasts love Mahindra for, and a trait that we hope continues to come through in future SUVs as well.
