Mahindra’s biggest launch of this year is the 5 door Thar ROXX and the 4X4 SUV has just been fully revealed. The latest teaser from Mahindra shows a white coloured Thar ROXX with a black coloured roof, giving the 4X4 SUV a dual tone look. From the headlamp and grille to the alloy wheels and most crucially the elongated body, this picture fully reveals the Mahindra Thar ROXX. Apart from the white coloured version, Mahindra has also put out another picture, which shows the right hand side front three quarters of a black coloured Thar ROXX. Here, check both pictures out.

As the picture clearly indicates, the Thar ROXX continues to have the traditional ‘Jeep’ look that makes it unmistakably a Thar. However, there are enough changes in the design to help Mahindra clearly differentiate the Thar ROXX from the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a SUV that it’s likely to go up against in markets abroad.

With the Thar ROXX, Mahindra aims to go big on exports and sell the 4X4 SUV not only in familiar international markets such as Australia and South Africa also probably Europe and the Americas, the latter which is solidly Jeep and the Wrangler’s turf. To that end, the grille design is almost a single unit that covers both headlamps. Gone are the 7 single slats up front, and the Thar ROXX instead features 12 slats.

The front bumper design with fog lamps looks similar though, and even the wheel arches, radio antenna and bonnet seem to be carried over. The alloy wheels are different and though the chunky wing mirrors look similar to those on the 3-door Thar, they get cameras under them for 360 degree function and blind spot detection. Yes, the Thar ROXX will get Level-2 ADAS, in the process becoming the first affordable 4X4 SUV in India to have this popular safety feature.

To allow for an extra set of doors on the Thar ROXX, Mahindra has stretched out the ladder frame chassis, which is now said to be a generation ahead (4G) of what’s found on the Scorpio-N (3G platform). The longer chassis also means that the Thar ROXX now has a unique middle and rear section, with a prominent kink that runs under the C-pillar. The C-pillar also houses the door handles, which continue to flap-type units.

On top is a metal hardtop, which again is a first for the Thar line-up. The metal hardtop has allowed Mahindra to offer one of the most popular feature in the Indian market. No prizes for guessing – the sunroof. Mahindra will offer a smaller, single pane sunroof on the mid variants of the Thar while the top-of-the-line model will get a panoramic sunroof.

This feature alone is expected to be a major selling point for the all-new Thar ROXX, and plenty of prospective buyers are likely to move from the 3 door model to the 5 door version for this very feature. Why, even existing 3-door Thar owners are expected to upgrade to the 5 door model thanks to the sunroofs.

On the inside, the 5 door Thar ROXX will look and feel significantly different from the 3 door model, in that it’ll offer beige/off white seats on the top-end trims. The seats will also get ventilation function, and even power adjustment for the driver’s seat is likely. There will be more airbags and creature comforts, and overall the Thar ROXX’s interiors are expected to be look closer to the Scorpio-N rather than that of the 3 door model’s.

In terms of engines and gearboxes, both turbo petrol and turbo diesel options will be on offer. The 2 liter-4 cylinder mFalcon turbo petrol engine will power the base trim. On the Thar ROXX, this motor will make 160 Bhp and 330 Nm on the lower trims, and 175 Bhp-380 Nm on the higher trims.

While the Thar 3-Door gets 130 Bhp-300 Nm from the 2.2 liter mHawk diesel motor, the 5-door Thar ROXX will get 150 Bhp-350 Nm on the base trims and 175 Bhp-380 Nm on the higher trims. 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearboxes will be standard. Mahindra is expected to offer both rear wheel drive and four wheel drive options on the 5-door Thar ROXX.

All in all, it’s quite an exciting time to be a Thar fan in India.
