The Mahindra Thar ROXX is less than a week away from an official unveil, and today we have power and torque numbers for both the petrol and diesel versions of the upcoming 4X4 SUV. As expected, Mahindra has used the same engines from the 3-door Thar but with an additional dollop of power and torque, reports ACI.

First, the engines!

The 2 liter-4 cylinder turbo petrol engine is likely to power the base trim. On the Thar ROXX, this motor will make 160 Bhp and 330 Nm on the lower trims, and 175 Bhp-380 Nm on the higher trims.

While these numbers are significantly higher than those on the 3-door Thar (150 Bhp-320 Nm), outright power is still lower than say the Mahindra Scorpio-N and XUV700 models, which get a 197 Bhp-380 Nm state of tune with the same engine.

6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearboxes will be standard. Mahindra is expected to offer both rear wheel drive and four wheel drive options on the 5-door Thar ROXX. While the rear wheel driven 3-door Thar uses 1.5 liter diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol engines, the Thar ROXX is likely to use the 2 liter turbo petrol and 2.2 liter turbo diesel on the rear wheel drive variants. Talking about the diesel motor, the tried and tested 2.2 mHawk will make it to the Thar ROXX, in higher states of tune.

While the Thar 3-Door gets 130 Bhp-300 Nm from the same motor, the 5-door Thar ROXX will get 150 Bhp-350 Nm on the base trims and 175 Bhp-380 Nm on the higher trims. Notably, even here, the XUV700 and Scorpio-N get slightly more torque at 400 Nm, and the 5 door Thar ROXX’s lower state of tune indicates that pricing could be very competitive indeed. Gearboxes will be the same as the ones on the petrol version. Clearly, the Thar ROXX will sit below the Scorpio-N and the XUV700, just as these numbers reveal.

Scorpio-N-Thar ROXX Bhai-Bhai

That’s right. The Thar ROXX is essentially a Scorpio-N with a different top hat. Like the Scorpio-N, the Thar ROXX sits on a rugged ladder frame chassis but the platform has moved a generation ahead – 4G from 3G.

The four wheel drive transfer case will be borrowed from the Scorpio-N, and the new 5-door Thar ROXX will feature an independent front setup with double wishbones and a multilink rear setup with Watts linkage.

Even the Frequency Selective Damping from the Scorpio-N will make an appearance on the Thar ROXX, which will also get a full metal hard top. It’s from here that the Thar ROXX comprehensively breaks away from the 3-door model to create a niche for itself. It’s just not the metal hard top but also the single pane sunroof on mid trims and the panoramic sunroof on the top-end trims.

Apart from these bits, electronic brake locking differential (E-BLD), electronic locking differential (ELD), multiple terrain modes – Snow, Sand and Mud, and a programmable Crawl Smart Assist (CSA) will make for off-road chops.

Mahindra has even added a ‘Intelli Turn Assist’ mode that locks the inner rear wheel during tight turns for about 15 seconds, and make the turning radius tighter. So, the Thar ROXX seems to have been engineered with both on-road and off-road performance in mind. The four wheel drive mode – offering low and high ratios – will continue to be lever operated though.

The only major difference between the Thar 3-door and ROXX models in terms of off road performance is the breakover angle. Thanks to the longer wheelbase of the Thar ROXX, breakover angle is 23.6 degrees, 2.6 degrees lower than that of the 3-door model.

This means that the Thar 3-door will continue to be the champ off the road while the 5 door ROXX may be a far better option for on-road use. Talking on road use, the Thar ROXX is likely to be far more comfortable than the 3 door model, and it begins from the extra set of doors. Then there’s the high quality, art leather interiors, the soft touch dashboard, Level 2 ADAS, more creature comforts such as automatic climate control and so on.

We’ll be attending the launch of the Mahindra Thar 5 Door ROXX on 15th of August, which also happens to be the India’s Independence Day. Watch this space.
