The Mahindra Thar Roxx, a rugged 5-door SUV that captured imaginations from the moment bookings opened, has been the subject of much anticipation - and, until recently, much frustration. For months, eager buyers faced daunting waiting periods, some stretching well beyond a year. Now, the tide is turning. The waiting period for the Thar Roxx has dropped significantly, bringing relief to thousands who have been tracking their booking status with bated breath. The Thar Roxx - across variants - is now available with waiting periods of 4-6 months, a big drop from 12-15 months.

The Waiting Period Drops

Fast forward to May 2025, and there’s a noticeable shift. Mahindra has ramped up production, and the waiting period for the Thar Roxx has dropped from as much as 15 months in late 2024 to just 6 months for most variants. The MX3 and MX5 trims now have waiting periods of around 4 months, while the AX7L and MX1 trims are at about 6 months. This improvement is significant, considering the earlier scenario where some buyers faced delivery dates stretching into mid-2026.

For those eyeing the regular Thar 3-door, the news is even better: the waiting period is now just about 2 months. The RWD diesel version has a wait of up to 2 months, while the petrol version is just over that mark. This means that buyers now have more realistic expectations and a much shorter countdown to delivery.

A Rush Like No Other

When Mahindra opened bookings for the Thar Roxx, the response was nothing short of extraordinary. Over 1.76 lakh bookings poured in within the first hour, a testament to the SUV’s widespread appeal.

The Thar Roxx’s blend of rugged capability, family-friendly space, and modern amenities struck a chord with buyers looking for a vehicle that could handle both city streets and rough terrain.

The initial excitement, however, quickly gave way to anxiety as waiting periods ballooned. Some variants, especially the more sought-after ones, had buyers staring at delivery timelines stretching up to 18 months.

Why the Long Wait?

The massive demand was only part of the story. Mahindra, like many automakers, faced production constraints due to supply chain challenges and the sheer volume of orders. The company prioritised fairness, allotting vehicles based on booking order, variant, and even colour preference.

This meant that some variants, particularly those with popular features or interiors, had longer queues. For instance, the top-spec AX7L 4x4 variants and the base MX1 trim saw some of the longest waits, while mid-spec models like the MX3 and MX5 were delivered a bit sooner.

Dealers often had little information to share, leaving buyers in the dark about when their vehicle might actually arrive. The uncertainty led to frustration, with many taking to online forums to share their experiences - some positive, some less so. Yet, the brand maintained that its process was designed to be as transparent and reliable as possible.

What’s Driving the Change?

The reduction in waiting periods is a result of several factors working together:

• Production Ramp-Up: Mahindra has increased production capacity, allowing more vehicles to roll off the line each month.

• Variant Distribution: The company has managed to balance production across different trims, ensuring that the most popular variants are being delivered in larger numbers.

• Supply Chain Improvements: As global supply chains stabilise, parts and components are more readily available, reducing bottlenecks.

This combination has made it possible for Mahindra to address the backlog more efficiently, much to the relief of those who have been waiting.

The Thar Roxx Experience

For many, the Thar Roxx is more than just a car: it’s a statement. Owners love its blend of toughness and comfort, noting that it handles rough roads with ease while offering a surprisingly refined interior. The 5-door format has made it more practical for families, and features like the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, along with manual and automatic transmission options, give buyers plenty of choice.

There are quirks, of course. Some owners have pointed out that maintaining the white interiors can be challenging, and the ride quality, while improved, still reflects the vehicle’s rugged roots. But overall, the sense of satisfaction is high, especially now that the dreaded wait is finally shrinking.

Shorter Waits Ahead

While the initial rush led to unprecedented waiting periods, Mahindra’s efforts to scale up production and streamline deliveries are paying off. Buyers who book now can expect a much shorter wait, making the dream of owning a Thar Roxx more attainable than ever.
