Mahindra will soon start the deliveries of their much-awaited electric SUVs- the BE 6 and XEV 9e. Known as the 'Electric Origin SUVs', these were launched in November 2024. Bookings opened on February 14, 2025. The BE 6 has a starting price of ₹18.90 lakh while the XEV starts at ₹21.90 lakh. These prices, however, did not include the charger costs, and Mahindra had previously mandated it to buy chargers with the cars. Now, it has made it clear that it will allow customers to opt out of the charger purchase in select cases.

What Mahindra Has To Say:

Mahindra is a company that listens to customer and user feedback and takes them seriously. The BE 6 and XEV 9e are both advanced in terms of battery and powertrain technologies. For optimum performance and battery life, proper charging is thus of supreme importance. Improper charging can also lead to compromised safety as well. Mahindra, like most other EV majors, has set stringent standards for its charging infrastructure.

When Mahindra announced its policy making it mandatory to purchase the official charging solutions, many potential buyers spoke against it, and requested relaxations, citing various reasons. Mahindra seems to have reviewed all these and has now made a provision for users to opt-out, if certain conditions are met or in specific scenarios.

While it strongly recommends installing and using Mahindra chargers at home, a customer of the BE 6 or XEV 9e can opt out of buying the charger, in the following cases.

  • If your office or residence lacks the provision of a private charger.
  • If you already have a charger that meets Mahindra's safety standards, installed.
  • For families purchasing more than one Electric Origin SUVs, a single charger could suffice.

The revised policy addresses the concerns of a lot of buyers and makes the ownership of the BE 6 and XEV 9e more flexible.

Mahindra Launches "Charge as a Service" (CaaS)

Stepping up its EV game, Mahindra has also launched the 'Charge As A Service' (CaaS) model in India. It is a part of the Indian carmaker's broader strategy to deliver a hassle-free ownership experience for BE6 and XEV owners.

With CaaS, customers can expect a complete package that includes the supply of chargers, professional installation services, and even periodic maintenance and upgrades for the charging equipment. It aims to remove the common pain points in EV charging.

Moreover, Mahindra plans to partner with third-party charging networks to provide its customers with convenient access to public charging stations. This means that even if you are not charging at home, you will have reliable options available wherever you go. The larger goal is to create a comprehensive ecosystem for EV adoption, targeting both urban and semi-urban markets.

Both the BE 6 and XEV 9e are underpinned by Mahindra's new-age INGLO platform. This high-voltage electric architecture has been developed in India for the world. It is a skateboard (born electric) platform which can comfortably accommodate a battery pack as large as 79 kWh.

The carmaker offers the choice of two battery packs on the BE 6 and XEV 9e- 59 and 79 kWh. At the time of compiling this story, the larger battery is offered only on the top-spec variants of the Electric Origin SUVs. Both battery packs are sourced from BYD and use blade cells. With proper charging, these will deliver excellent range figures, enthusing performance and impressive life.

Mahindra is so confident about their product that they offer a lifetime warranty on the battery for the first-owners of these electric SUVs. Subsequent owners will get to enjoy 10-year or 200,000 km coverage.
