The Mahindra XUV 3XO was introduced as a replacement for the XUV 300, a rebadged Ssangyong Tivoli. It was, however, underpinned by the same Tivoli-borrowed platform. Now, the carmaker has confirmed its intent to make the next-generation 3XO transition out of the platform. On August 15, the carmaker had showed off four interesting concept cars at Mumbai- Vision S, Vision SXT, Vision T and Vision X. The production form of the Vision X will replace the 3XO when launched. This means that Mahindra’s upcoming sub-compact SUV will now move to the newly developed NU_IQ platform.

The new platform has a wheelbase of 2665 mm and will be used on vehicles of different segments and sizes- from the 3XO replacement to the Thar.

When the XUV 300 was made into the 3XO, the changes weren’t extensive. The familiar Tivoli air could still be found at various places. This will not be the case with the production-spec Vision X.

Production Form Of Vision X: What Do We Know About It

The 3XO was launched in 2024. The Tivoli’s platform gave Mahindra a strong foothold in the sub-4-metre SUV space. The Vision X, underpinned by the NU_IQ, will solidify the same. The new monocoque platform has been developed in-house by Mahindra and incorporates several advanced technologies like a five-link rear suspension and Davinci dampers.

Like the other vision cars, the Vision X has also been developed at the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) and Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE). On design grounds, the re-engineered successor of the XUV 3XO will not be a huge departure from the Vision X.

The Vision X has a jet-fighter-inspired fascia. The small SUV also comes with C-shaped LED DRLs, squarish LED headlamps, a large grille, a long bonnet, and a large air dam. The vehicle rides on 19-inch wheels and has connected LED tail lamps at the rear. The spoiler further has transparent fins, and the roofline tapers down towards the rear. As it turns out, the production model could carry over most of these cues.

Mahindra hasn’t revealed the exact dimensions of the production-spec. However, considering the segment that it falls into, the production form could have a length of around 3990 mm. The platform supports ground clearances of up to 204mm. However, considering the urban SUV nature of the Vision S production car, it is likely to be in the ballpark of 200mm. For context, the 3XO has a ground clearance of 201 mm.

The NU_IQ platform will be able to support multiple powertrain options. We expect the production form of the Vision X to have both petrol and diesel engine options. It could use the same engines as the outgoing 3XO.

The platform can further support Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD). The production guise of Vision X will likely come with an FWD setup alone. Since the NU_IQ also supports electrification, it could form the base for the XUV 400 replacement in the future.

Interior Details Sparse At The Moment

The carmaker hasn’t revealed the interior details of the Vision X. We expect to see these as the concept evolves. The production-spec will likely have a better cabin design and more features than the outgoing 3XO. Mahindra could likely opt for a minimalist dashboard design and features including a dual-screen setup- one for the infotainment and the other for instrumentation.

We hope to see the production form in flesh by 2027 or later, and when launched, it will compete with the likes of the Nexon, Kylaq, Sonet, Venue, and the Brezza.
