Less than a month after Tata Motors launched the Harrier.ev with all-wheel-drive (AWD) on June 3, Mahindra appears to be preparing its own counterstrike. The upcoming XEV 7e, based on Mahindra’s new INGLO EV platform, is now expected to feature AWD capabilities in its top variant, positioning it directly against Tata’s first-ever AWD electric SUV.

The Tata Harrier.ev has already made a strong impression by becoming the first mainstream electric SUV with AWD from a homegrown brand, using a dual-motor layout and promising over 500 km of range. Its expected price of ₹27.5 lakh (ex-showroom) and aggressive introductory features, including Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, and a refreshed cabin, have caught the attention of buyers in the premium midsize segment.

Now, Mahindra seems ready to strike back. The XEV 7e, part of Mahindra’s upcoming electric SUV range, will be built on the same platform that underpins the BE.05 and XEV.e8 concepts. Sources suggest that the top variant will feature a dual-motor AWD setup with a combined output of around 310–325 bhp, with torque distribution managed electronically to suit road conditions and drive modes. This drivetrain mirrors what Tata is offering, indicating that Mahindra doesn’t want to cede the premium electric SUV segment without a fight.

Battery options are expected to include a 60–65 kWh pack in the standard model and a larger 80+ kWh unit in the AWD variant, which would deliver a claimed range of 550–600 km (ARAI-certified). The vehicle is also expected to support ultra-fast charging, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes with a 175 kW DC charger - figures that will match or exceed the Harrier.ev’s performance.

The timing of Mahindra’s AWD confirmation is telling. Tata’s move to offer AWD in the very first version of the Harrier.ev caught many by surprise, especially as Mahindra had long been expected to lead the electric SUV space with performance-driven products. With the XEV 7e still a few months away from launch - expected in late 2025 - Mahindra has a limited window to match or exceed Tata’s offering before Harrier.ev builds a loyal base.

Pricing will be key. Tata launched the Harrier.ev at ₹27.5–₹32 lakh, depending on variant and battery configuration. Mahindra will likely aim to price the XEV 7e AWD around the same ₹30–₹33 lakh mark, but may try to undercut Tata slightly in base trims to draw initial traction.

Apart from drivetrain specs, Mahindra is banking on premium features. The XEV 7e is expected to offer a twin-screen dashboard, 5G-connected car technology, flush door handles, advanced voice controls, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. The design will be more futuristic than the XUV700, signalling a clean break into its dedicated EV identity.

Meanwhile, Tata is already working to extend the Harrier.ev’s appeal by launching a Dark Edition, rolling out OTA updates to improve regenerative braking control, and highlighting its off-road readiness. Test drives and reviews have praised its composed ride, strong grip on loose surfaces, and near-silent cabin, areas where Mahindra must now meet or exceed expectations.

Dealers on both sides are gearing up. Tata showrooms are reporting strong footfall for the Harrier.ev, especially in metro cities, and Mahindra dealers are teasing the XEV 7e as their “most advanced SUV yet.” Buyers looking at this segment are now aware that performance, not just affordability, is shaping this new EV battle.

So far, Mahindra has played it smart, watching Tata’s move before firming up its own. But now the message is clear: the XEV 7e is being armed with AWD and flagship tech not just to compete - but to dominate. With both automakers now offering AWD electric SUVs by the end of this year, the premium EV market is set for its fiercest rivalry yet.
