The EV landscape in India is witnessing a rapid evolution. With changing market winds, we see more manufacturers coming up with new products across segments and price brackets. MG and Tata Motors have been leading the game for long. Mahindra has been quite bullish with its EV plans in recent months. The fight is expected to intensify in the upcoming years. It hopes to beat MG and Tata with three new electric SUVs. These will battle popular EV offerings like the Nexon EV and Windsor EV. Let's take a closer look at the carmaker's EV game plan.

The Context

The first seven months of 2025 showed an explosive growth in EV sales. 90,639 electric vehicles were sold between January 1 and July 31, 2025. This translates to 60% YoY (Year-on-Year) growth over the first seven months of 2024. More interestingly, EV sales this year are expected to hit a new high. The best-ever annual sales yet have been 99,634 units, recorded in CY2024. 91% of this was covered in the first seven months itself.

In terms of volumes, Tata Motors took the lead during the period, posting sales of 34,700 units and with a market share of 38%. The Indian carmaker currently has a wide electric vehicle portfolio comprising the Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv. EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV and the newly launched Harrier.EV. Most of these are mass market products falling into segments with high consumer interests.

The numbers have, in fact, fallen compared to the first seven months of 2024. The decline can be attributed to aggressive product onslaughts by brands like JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra.

MG is having a great time as well. It sold 29,381 units during the period. This means a 214% increase compared to the first seven months sales last year. Mahindra continues to register strong growth and posted sales of 15,556 units. This points to an impressive YoY growth of 253% over the first seven months of 2024. The market share has also climbed to 17%. Mahindra's EV momentum was based heavily on the XEV 9e and BE 6e.

Mahindra's Game Plan To Beat MG And Tata Motors

Mahindra plans to base the fightback on three important products- the XUV 3XO-based EV, XEV 7e, and the BE6 Rall.E. The 3XO-based EV could probably be the most important of the three. When launched, it will compete with the Tata Nexon EV. More importantly, it will have to fight the hot-selling MG Windsor EV as well.

The 3XO EV will stand close to the petrol/diesel version in terms of design. However, minor changes like an EV-specific grille, tweaked bumpers, and a revised tailgate are to be expected. Two battery packs are expected- 34.5 kWh and 39.4 kWh. The first has an estimated range of 359 km per charge, and the second could likely deliver 456 km. The all-electric powertrain is expected to produce 148hp and 310 Nm. It could have its price in the range of Rs 13-17 lakh, ex-showroom.

Expected launch: End of 2025

The second product, the XEV 7e, will essentially be an all-electric version of the XUV 700 SUV. The production form will borrow several design cues from the XEV 9e. It will EV-specific cues like a blanked-off grille, flush-type door handles, and aero-optimised wheels. We expect the cabin to come with a layout and colours inspired by those of the 9e. The feature list too will have a lot in common.

The XEV 7e is based on the INGLO platform and will likely come with the same two battery packs as the BE6 and XEV 9e- the BYD-sourced 59 kWh and 79 kWh. Rumours., however, suggest that the carmaker could offer a larger 80+ kWh unit on the range-topping variant, which is also expected to come with All Wheel Drive (AWD).

When launched, the XEV 7e will lock horns with the Tata Harrier.EV. Tata has disrupted the space by packing AWD and a mountain of torque (over 500 Nm!) into the Harrier.EV. This has put the current XEV 9e at a massive disadvantage, as it is a Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) offering with much less torque on offer. With the XEV 7e rolling out, the playing field will be levelled again for Mahindra.

Expected launch: early 2026

The third product in the pipeline is the BE6 Rall.E. This was previously showcased as a concept. The production-spec is expected to be out by the end of this year. The near-production-ready form was recently spotted testing in Rajasthan. Think of the Rall.E as a rugged, 'rally-going' version of the BE6. It will be based on the INGLO platform, and will likely come with the same set of battery options as well- 59 kWh and 79 kWh. The Rall.E will be equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD) system. This will intensify Mahindra's fight with the Harrier.EV's AWD version.

Expected launch: end of 2025

More Profits Inbound For Mahindra's EV Vertical

Mahindra plans to expand its EV portfolio into more segments and price ranges. It seems to be readying products that are capable of fighting the best rivals in business- be it the Nexon EV, Windsor or the Harrier.EV.

The battle getting stronger, will also benefit buyers. Increased competition will lead to more options to choose from and eventually better product quality and peace of ownership.

For the manufacturer, more products rolling out will demand it to ramp up the production. It currently has a capacity of 8000 units per month. It plans to increase the installed production capacity to 12,000 units by end of March 2026. This will eventually lead to more profits from the EV business if the current demand sustains. Interestingly, it posted Rs 111 Crore EBITDA in the first quarter of FY26. The total revenue stood at Rs 2,800 crores.

In the time ahead, Mahindra is expected to diversify its electric SUV portfolio in the country. On August 15, it will showcase at least four all-electric vision cars, which will likely spawn production forms sometime in the future.
