We have all been waiting for the Maruti eVitara electric SUV to launch in India. Maruti Suzuki had showcased it for the first time at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, and the market launch was expected early this year. It was, however, delayed due to various reasons. Now, the wait is finally over. Maruti Suzuki has started the production of the eVitara electric SUV at Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first made-in-India eVitara on Tuesday (August 26). The plant will produce eVitaras for both domestic sales and exports.

The Honourable Prime Minister inaugurated the export line. Maruti Suzuki plans to export the eVitara SUV to more than 100 countries. These include markets like Europe and Japan as well. This will make India Suzuki’s global EV manufacturing hub.

Talking about the rollout, Modi said that it marks a milestone in India’s drive towards cleaen mobility and self reliance in automotive manufacturing. The plant is designed with cost-efficient exports in mind. It connects directly to the Mundra port. This will play a key role in integrating India into the global EV manufacturing chain.

Suzuki, through a joint venture with Toshiba and Denso, has set up a facility in Gujarat- TDS Lithium-ion battery plant- for manufacturing hybrid battery electrodes. The Prime Minister inaugurated this facility as well. He later shared a post on X (previously Twitter), in which he talked in detail about these developments.

The battery plant, in particular, is expected to bring significant boosts to the domestic manufacturing and clean energy sectors in India. It intends to manufacture more than 80% of the battery value within the country.

Hansalpur plant is the first Maruti Suzuki production facility in India to get a production line for electric vehicles. The new line was built with an investment of over Rs 2000 crores, in a record span of 12 months.

Hansalpur now has two different assembly streams- one for conventional vehicles and the other for EVs. The segregated approach caters to the eVitara’s unique production needs without affecting the manufacturing of conventional vehicles.
