Maruti Fronx Becomes India’s Fastest Car To Hit 2 Lakh Sales: Why’s Everyone Buying It?

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has achieved another remarkable milestone as its Fronx crossed the 2-lakh sales mark in just 17.3 months since its launch. Maruti Fronx was launched in April 2023. The crossover quickly rose to acceptance. In January this year, it posted sales of 1 lakh units, becoming the fastest model to do so. The next 1 lakh units were sold in just 7.3 months. The SUV has now become India’s fastest car to hit the 2 lakh sales mark.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki, expressed pride in the Fronx’s success, noting the SUV’s appeal to both first-time buyers and those looking to upgrade. He highlighted the model’s 16% year-on-year growth in FY25 and the strong demand for the turbocharged engine with paddle shifters, which offers a dynamic driving experience.
Several factors could be attributed to the Fronx’s popularity. Here are five such reasons:
Baleno SUV: First, the Fronx is essentially a crossover SUV based on the popular Baleno hatchback. It gets a sturdy crossover styling and has a higher ground clearance than the Baleno. The Baleno’s ground clearance is 170 mm. But the Fronx has a clearance of 190 mm, 20 mm more than the hatchback. This makes it extremely practical in the Indian conditions. This added sense of convenience along with the general affinity towards SUVs could be driving sales.
Powertrain Choices: Another key contributing factor to the Fronx’s popularity is the wide range of available powertrains. It is available with naturally aspirated petrol, turbocharged petrol and CNG engines. The 1.2 NA petrol engine produces 90 PS and 113 Nm. The same engine, when used with CNG generates 77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm. The 1.2 Turbocharged Boosterjet engine produces 100 PS and 148 Nm.
The transmission options include a manual, torque converter automatic, and AMT. Thus, one wouldn’t have to look for other options, just because he/she failed to find the powertrain of preference. There’s something for everyone.
Well priced. Cheaper than most sub-4-meter SUVs: The next big catch is the price. The Fronx is priced in the range of 7.51-13.04 lakh, ex-showroom. The turbo variants start at 10.55 lakh. This, if you might recall, is more affordable than most sub-4-meter SUVs. The Kia Sonet for example, is priced from 7.99 lakh and goes up to 15.7 lakh. Packing ample style, tech and value for the price gives it an advantage. There are a total of 5 trims available: Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta, and Alpha.
Maruti Suzuki’s Reliability and Aftersales: The reliability and aftersales support offered by Maruti Suzuki’s extensive network also drives sales. The Fronx is sold via Nexa showrooms- the manufacturer’s premium retailer network. The Nexa network is also expanding rapidly and reaching more geographies. Thus, buying and owning a Fronx will not be strenuous for most. The maintenance costs too are less compared to rivals.
Probably The Most Youthful Car In Maruti’s Present Portfolio: The Fronx is probably the best-looking car that Maruti sells today. It comes with a youthful design and offers a pleasant cabin experience. The key design highlights are a large NEXWave grille, three-block crystal LED DRLs, and a triangular LED headlamp unit. The fascia could remind you of the larger Grand Vitara.
The roof has a sloping design and comes with silver rails. The vehicle also gets chunky side cladding and squared-off wheel arches. At the rear, you can find LED taillights, a silver skid plate, and a prominent bumper. The SUV rides on 16-inch wheels. It stays clean of any major design resemblance to the Baleno, and that’s a good thing!
The cabin has a stylish layout and comes packed with features like a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Automatic climate control, rear AC vents, Push button start, flat-bottom steering wheel, and a heads-up display.
