Although at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo this year, Maruti Suzuki launched its first-ever electric vehicle, it still believes that strong hybrids are the future of mobility in India and across the globe. For this very reason, the company has started working on the development of multiple strong hybrid models. Of these, the one that is coming very soon is the Fronx hybrid. Recently, a spy shot of this hybrid crossover SUV was shared online.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid Spy Shot

Maruti Suzuki has already started testing the new Fronx hybrid in India. Just a while ago, a fully undisguised test mule of this vehicle was spotted testing on public roads. It was noted that the vehicle looked exactly the same as the current model. However, there was a hybrid badge on the lower-right corner of the rear tailgate.

The main highlight of the Fronx hybrid, as the name suggests, will be its series hybrid powertrain. For those who may not be aware, the new series hybrid powertrain developed by Maruti Suzuki will use the internal combustion engine as a generator. It will power the battery pack, which will then power the electric motors of this vehicle.

In a traditional strong hybrid setup, the internal combustion engine powers the wheels with assistance from the battery pack. However, the new series hybrid system is a lot more efficient, and it has been reported that the range offered by this drivetrain will be much better. In addition to the Fronx hybrid, Maruti Suzuki is also working on the development of five other strong hybrid vehicles for India.

Five Other Strong Hybrid Cars Coming from Maruti Suzuki

Grand Vitara 7-Seater Strong Hybrid

Codenamed as the Y-17, Maruti Suzuki has been working on the development of the seven-seater version of the Grand Vitara. This new extended model will boast a third row of seats, thanks to the longer wheelbase. It has to be noted that although the Grand Vitara seven-seater will be a strong hybrid, it will not be a series hybrid. Rather, it will feature the same series-parallel hybrid setup seen on the current five-seater model.

Baleno Strong Hybrid

Coming to the other strong hybrid vehicle in the lineup of Maruti Suzuki, the upcoming generation of the Baleno hatchback will boast the new series hybrid powertrain. Internally, the Baleno hybrid has been codenamed YTA. This model is expected to make its official debut in 2026. Maruti Suzuki aims to sell 60,000 units of this vehicle in a year.

Spacia-Based Strong Hybrid MPV

Maruti Suzuki wants to challenge the popular affordable MPV Renault Triber in the country. For this reason, the company is planning to launch a brand-new model based on the Japanese Kei car Spacia. For the people who may not know, Kei cars are very small cars sold in Japan, which are restricted by dimensions and engine specifications. This MPV will also boast a series hybrid powertrain.

Swift Strong Hybrid

The country’s largest carmaker has already started testing the Swift mild hybrid in India. However, in 2027, the brand will bring in the strong hybrid model, which will boast the series hybrid system. Historically, the Swift has been a very important hatchback for the company, and adding a strong hybrid system, which will enhance its fuel efficiency, will make it even more popular in India.

Dzire Strong Hybrid

Last but not least, Maruti Suzuki will also launch the Dzire strong hybrid in India. This sub-compact sedan will boast the same series hybrid powertrain as the Swift hybrid. Currently, the new-generation Dzire comes equipped with a 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder petrol engine. It makes 80 bhp and 111 Nm of torque.
