Maruti Suzuki is finally joining the electric revolution with its first all-electric SUV—the eVitara. Slated to launch in India in the second quarter of 2025, this marks a major shift in direction for the country’s most trusted carmaker. But make no mistake, the eVitara isn’t just a model for India. It’s part of a larger global strategy that places Maruti Suzuki—and its partner Toyota—on the EV map.

While Indian buyers got their first proper look at the vehicle during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, the car has already been showcased overseas, where media drives and international promotions are well underway. That alone says a lot about where Maruti is focusing its energies. This electric SUV, though designed and manufactured in India, is clearly being positioned for global markets first.

But with its India launch now just months away, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVitara.

The Heaviest Maruti Yet

The eVitara is expected to weigh up to 1,900 kg in its AWD variant, making it the heaviest Maruti ever built. That’s understandable given the presence of a large battery pack, reinforced chassis, and added components for all-wheel drive. But this heft also brings benefits—particularly in the form of a planted and confident highway ride, which is something buyers upgrading from smaller Marutis will notice immediately.

The Fastest Maruti Too

Surprisingly for a brand known for fuel efficiency rather than outright speed, the eVitara is also the fastest Maruti Suzuki till date. The AWD variant delivers 143 kW (194 PS) and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds. The 2WD variant produces 100 kW (136 PS) and does the same run in about 9.6 seconds. That’s not just quick by Maruti standards—it’s competitive even among established EV players in the segment.

Two Powertrains, Two Personalities

Maruti is offering the eVitara in two drivetrain configurations: front-wheel drive (2WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). While both use the same 61 kWh battery, the AWD model gets more power and better traction, especially useful in wet or hilly conditions. The 2WD variant will likely be more efficient and lighter, making it the go-to choice for urban buyers.

Range Realities: Not Quite the 600 km Fantasy

Maruti’s marketing pitch in earlier internal discussions hinted at real-world range figures of up to 600 km—but that’s simply not feasible with a 61 kWh battery. You’d need something closer to 80 or even 90 kWh for that kind of range. In reality, the eVitara’s expected WLTP range is around 428 km, and real-world figures will likely hover between 300–350 km depending on conditions and driving style. It's still enough for daily city use and weekend road trips, but buyers should know what they’re signing up for.

It’s also worth noting that Maruti is sourcing its battery packs from BYD, a global leader in EV battery technology, which should inspire some confidence in long-term reliability and performance.

Charging: Quick When You Need It

Charging times are respectable. The eVitara supports DC fast charging up to 70 kW, which can take the battery from 20% to 80% in under an hour—doesn’t sound very exciting. There’s also an 11 kW AC onboard charger, allowing for overnight home charging when plugged into a standard wall box. A portable charger will also be included, giving buyers more flexibility when travelling.

Designed for Indian Roads, But Built for the World

With 180 mm of ground clearance, the eVitara is well-prepared for uneven roads and occasional rough patches. But make no mistake, this SUV has been designed keeping global buyers in mind. From its styling to features, and even the initial international focus of its rollout, it’s clear that Maruti Suzuki is looking at markets beyond India. The eVitara’s clean, modern lines and upmarket cabin are expected to appeal to buyers in Europe, Latin America, and other emerging markets.

Shared DNA: Toyota’s Urban Cruiser EV Is Coming Too

An interesting twist in the tale is that this SUV will also be rebadged and sold globally as a Toyota model, expected to be called the Urban Cruiser EV. It will be manufactured by Maruti Suzuki at its Gujarat plant and is slated to be Toyota’s most affordable electric vehicle worldwide. So while Maruti plays catch-up in the Indian EV space, it’s playing a key manufacturing and development role in Toyota’s global EV plans.

A More Premium Cabin Experience

Step inside, and the eVitara feels like a step up from typical Maruti cabins. You get a dual-screen layout, a floating centre console, and a neat shelf-like dashboard with gloss black inserts. There’s leatherette-fabric upholstery, ventilated front seats, a 10-way powered driver’s seat, and modern conveniences like wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s enough room in the rear, though taller passengers might find the floor a bit high because of the battery pack underneath.

Colours, Features, and Warranty

Maruti will offer the eVitara in a range of five colour options, including some international-style dual-tone shades that look quite sharp. What really stands out, though, is the 10-year battery warranty—the longest ever offered by Maruti Suzuki. This move should go a long way in reassuring first-time EV buyers. And since it will be retailed through the Nexa chain, buyers can also expect a more polished, premium showroom experience.

A Milestone Moment for Maruti—and a New Direction

For years, Maruti Suzuki stayed on the sidelines while others took early bets on electric mobility. But the eVitara signals that the brand is finally ready to engage seriously with the EV segment—not just in India, but on a global stage. While local promotion has been relatively muted so far, expect things to ramp up as the launch nears.

For buyers, the eVitara won’t just be about owning an electric SUV—it’s about owning Maruti’s most advanced car yet. It is unlikely to be the most exciting or cutting-edge EV in its class but it may be the most practical. And that makes it a car worth watching.
