Maruti Suzuki showcased its first electric SUV- the eVitara, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. People have since been waiting for its market entry. Clues from the event suggested the launch would happen sometime in March this year. The electric SUV was, however, delayed to the market. There were several reasons for it getting postponed. As confirmed by previous reports, the eVitara has already started reaching dealerships. Remember our story on a display car getting unveiled at a dealership in Bengaluru? Some showrooms had even started accepting unofficial bookings for the same, early this year.

A Closer Look At The eVitara

Reports say that Maruti Suzuki's first EV for India will be available in three grades/trims- Delta, Zeta and Alpha. Think of it as the production form of the eVX concept showcased in Milan. When launched, this mid-size electric SUV will lock horns with the likes of Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and Mahindra BE6.

Maruti plans to manufacture the eVitara at its Gujarat facility. This is a global product and there will be a strong focus on exports. As much as 50% of the total production could be exported to markets like Japan and Europe.

On the design front, the eVitara has retained many cues of the original concept. It gets a classic two-box design, rugged styling and SUV-like proportions. Key exterior highlights are tri-slash LED DRLs, charging ports that sit on the front flanks, and flared wheel arches at the rear. It spans 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

The cabin, as seen on the Auto Expo car, is neatly laid out, tech-packed and offers ample room. There is a floating center console with a rotary drive selector and multiple storage areas. The EV will have features like two large screens- one for infotainment and the other doing duty as the driver display, a wireless phone charger, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, electric parking brake with auto hold, and ADAS.

The rear seats will have a split-folding design and come with adjustable headrests. Occupants here get ample legroom and headroom as well.

The EV will have two battery pack choices on offer- 49kWh and 61kWh. These will be sourced from BYD. The latter will have a range of over 500 km per charge. The smaller battery version will have an output of 144hp and 189Nm and the larger will produce 174hp. Maruti Suzuki has both FWD (Front Wheel Drive) and AWD (All Wheel Drive) versions of the eVitara on sale globally. Only the FWD version will be brought to India initially.

The EV weighs between 1,702 to 1,899 kilograms and has a ground clearance of 180mm. The company has based this electric SUV on the new Heartect-e EV platform, co-developed with Toyota. It gets Suzuki’s eAxles, combining motor and inverter, and is versatile enough to support multiple top hats.

In India, the ex-showroom price of the eVitara could start at around 20 lakh rupees. The larger battery pack will likely have a price of Rs 25 lakh )(ex-showroom).

Why Was The Launch Delayed?

China's recent curb on rare earth metal exports seems to be the primary reason. These are essential for manufacturing the e-SUV's motors and other key powertrain components. The supply disruptions caused by this move likely pushed the EV's market-entry and the production forecast was reduced significantly.
