Maruti Fronx Dethrones Punch, Nexon, Brezza In February: Becomes Top Selling 'SUV'

As a surprise to everyone, the crossover SUV Fronx from Maruti Suzuki has managed to grab the crown of being the best-selling car in India. Last month, in February, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx achieved sales of 21,461 units, surpassing the previous best-selling cars like the Hyundai Creta, Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, and its own sibling, the Brezza. Maruti Suzuki launched the Fronx back in April 2023.
In terms of the sales of the Fronx in the month of February, the country's largest automaker dispatched a total of 21,461 units of this crossover SUV. In the same month last year, the sales figure of this SUV was 14,168 units. This sales growth translates to a 51 percent year-on-year increase, which is extremely impressive, given that the Fronx was launched alongside the much-hyped Jimny lifestyle off-roader.
What's also interesting is that the Fronx has managed to beat the likes of the Hyundai Creta, which posted a sales figure of 16,317 units. In February 2024, the company sold a total of 15,276 units of the Creta. Its year-on-year growth has been reported to be 7 percent. In addition to the Creta, the Fronx has also beaten the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Tata Nexon.
Maruti Suzuki dispatched a total of 15,392 units, and in February of last year, its sales were 15,765 units. Its overall growth decreased by 2 percent. As for the sales of the Tata Nexon, the company managed to sell a total of 15,349 units, and in the same month last year, its sales were 14,395 units. This represents a decent sales growth of 7 percent.
Last year, in October, it was announced that the Maruti Suzuki Fronx had become the fastest car to cross 2 lakh total sales. It managed to achieve this milestone in just 17.3 months. This crossover SUV’s sales are increasing rapidly, and most likely, it could break a few more records in the coming period.
The Fronx has managed to achieve these sales milestones due to a number of reasons. Of these, the first is that it is based on the already popular premium hatchback Baleno from Maruti Suzuki. This tried-and-tested base has helped the Fronx lure in many buyers. Also, what has worked for the Fronx is its SUV styling and better ground clearance.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno offers a ground clearance of 170 mm. Meanwhile, the Fronx offers a ground clearance of 190 mm. Apart from this, the Fronx's engine options have also contributed to its success. The company offers this crossover SUV with three drivetrain options. The first is a 1.2 NA petrol engine producing 90 PS and 113 Nm. The same engine, when used with CNG, generates 77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm. The 1.2 Turbocharged Boosterjet engine produces 100 PS and 148 Nm.
In addition to the standard ICE model, the company is also working on the development of the Fronx Series Hybrid. For those who may not be aware, in a traditional strong hybrid setup, the internal combustion engine powers the wheels with assistance from the battery pack. However, in a series hybrid setup, the engine acts as a generator, which then recharges the battery pack, offering an extended range. It is believed that this model will be launched in 2026.
