Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working on a 7-seater version of its popular Grand Vitara SUV. Spy images of a camouflaged test mule have surfaced, hinting at an extended version of the current model. Expected to be based on the same Global C platform as the standard Grand Vitara, the new 7-seater SUV will cater to families looking for a spacious, feature-packed vehicle in the mid-size SUV segment.

This upcoming model is part of Maruti Suzuki’s larger plan to expand its SUV lineup, which already includes the Fronx, Brezza, Jimny, and Grand Vitara. The new SUV is likely to carry design cues from the upcoming e-Vitara electric SUV, making it visually distinct from its 5-seater counterpart.

Likely Price and Features

Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed the pricing, but we expect the Grand Vitara 7-seater to be priced between ₹15 lakh and ₹22 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it against models like the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus.

Expected features include:

  • ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) for enhanced safety
  • A larger touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Revised instrument cluster similar to the e-Vitara’s design
  • Panoramic sunroof (likely on higher trims)
  • Ventilated front seats for added comfort
  • Connected car technology with remote vehicle monitoring

The SUV is also expected to get design tweaks such as a redesigned grille, sharper LED headlamps, and wraparound tail lamps, drawing inspiration from the upcoming Maruti eVX electric SUV.

Will it be a genuine 7-seater?

It well have three rows and 7 seats but we are not sure if the 3rd row seats would be usable by adults. Reports indicate that Maruti Suzuki will offer the model in both 6-seater (captain seats) and 7-seater (bench seats) configurations to cater to different customer needs.

To accommodate the third row, the wheelbase will be extended, and the overall length will increase. The longer rear overhang seen in spy shots further supports this speculation. However, boot space may be impacted, especially in the 7-seater variant when all rows are in use. Maruti Suzuki may have to adjust the hybrid battery placement—in the petrol-strong hybrid version—to create space for the third row and to optimize luggage capacity.

Will it get a more powerful engine than the Grand Vitara 5-seater?

The Grand Vitara 7-seater is expected to retain the same 1.5-liter mild hybrid petrol engine and the 1.5-liter strong hybrid petrol engine found in the current 5-seater model.

Engine TypeDisplacementPower OutputTransmission Options
Mild Hybrid Petrol1.5L, 4-cylinder~103 bhp5-speed MT / 6-speed AT
Strong Hybrid Petrol1.5L, 3-cylinder~116 bhpe-CVT

There are no confirmed reports of a more powerful engine option. However, considering competition from turbo-petrol and diesel rivals, Maruti could fine-tune the powertrains or introduce a new engine variant. If Maruti sticks with same engines-power specs as the 5-seater Grand Vitara then the heavier 7-seater Grand Vitara might be a rather sluggish SUV.

Competition

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara 7-seater will compete in the highly contested mid-size three-row SUV segment. Below is a quick comparison of key competitors:

ModelSeating OptionsEngine ChoicesADAS Features
Hyundai Alcazar6 / 7-seater1.5L Turbo-Petrol, 1.5L DieselYes
Mahindra XUV7005 / 7-seater2.0L Turbo-Petrol, 2.2L DieselYes (Level 2)
Tata Safari6 / 7-seater2.0L DieselYes
MG Hector Plus6 / 7-seater1.5L Turbo-Petrol, 2.0L DieselYes

The Grand Vitara 7-seater is expected to differentiate itself with fuel-efficient hybrid powertrains, Maruti’s strong service network, and competitive pricing. But whether its able to challenge diesel-powered/turbo petrol rivals, many of whom are likely to offer more space, remains to be seen.

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara 7-seater aims to bridge the gap between compact SUVs and larger three-row models by offering practicality, fuel efficiency, and a feature-rich cabin. While it may not introduce a more powerful engine, its hybrid powertrain and Maruti’s strong brand value could make it an attractive choice for buyers looking for a family-friendly SUV—lack of diesel power-train could hamper its ability to challenge its more potent rivals.

With a 2025 launch expected, the Grand Vitara 7-seater will likely be manufactured at Maruti’s upcoming Kharkhoda plant in Haryana. Still, if Maruti successfully prices and positions it right, the new model could strengthen its foothold in the growing three-row SUV segment.
