The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is gearing up for the launch of the Swift CNG in India. It has been reported that the company will be launching the new fourth-generation Swift’s CNG variants next week. The company initially launched the Swift with a single powertrain option of its newly developed Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. However, it is now launching the Swift CNG to fulfill the demand of the waiting buyers.

Swift CNG: What’s New?

Like all the other CNG models from Maruti Suzuki, the Swift CNG will offer no exterior design upgrades. It will look exactly the same as the petrol-only model. Also, it will continue to utilize the same Z12E engine, a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine.

This engine, presently in the petrol variants of the new Swift, produces 82 bhp of power and 112 Nm of torque. However, in the CNG variant, these figures will be slightly lower.

This is a very typical characteristic of vehicles with CNG powertrains. This translates into more fuel efficiency. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and it could also get the AMT transmission as well.

Fuel Efficiency

Like all the CNG models, one of the key selling points of the Swift CNG will be its fuel efficiency. While the petrol version of the Swift offers an impressive mileage of 24.80 kmpl with a manual gearbox and 25.75 kmpl with an automatic transmission.

It is anticipated that the new Swift CNG could push these numbers even further. According to reports, the Swift CNG is expected to deliver a mileage of over 32 km/kg. If the reports turn out to be true, it will make the Swift one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its class.

Pricing Details and Competition

As for the pricing of the upcoming Swift CNG, it has to be noted that the current petrol variants of the Swift are priced between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.64 lakh (ex-showroom). The addition of the CNG option is expected to raise the price by approximately Rs 90,000 to Rs 95,000 over the corresponding petrol variants.

Once launched, the Swift CNG will face competition from other popular models in the CNG segment. This will include the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Tata Tiago. Both of these models are already being offered with CNG kits from the factory.

Maruti Suzuki CNG Cars

Maruti Suzuki is currently the largest CNG carmaker in India. It has an extensive portfolio that includes 14 models. In August 2024 alone, Maruti sold 49,602 units of CNG cars, accounting for 34.67% of its domestic passenger vehicle volumes. Its popular models include the Ertiga, Brezza, and Dzire, and the Swift will now join the list of best-selling CNG cars from the brand.

Why Does Swift CNG Matter?

For those who may be wondering why the introduction of the Swift CNG matters, the answer is that although historically the Swift has been a consistent performer in terms of sales, the increasing popularity of SUVs and crossovers has started to shift consumer interest away from hatchbacks.

So, by offering a CNG variant, Maruti is looking to capture a bigger share of the growing demand for more fuel-efficient cars. Additionally, the Swift CNG is expected to appeal to a broad audience, including those who are looking for a reliable and economical daily driver.
