MG 4 EV: The Creta-Sized Electric Hatchback That Could Enter India

The MG 4 EV, a compact electric hatchback, has been revealed in its updated form, featuring a larger footprint and a revised design. Measuring 4,395mm in length with a 2,750mm wheelbase, it is slightly bigger than the Hyundai Creta. The car gets a 163hp motor and an LFP battery pack, though its final specifications for different markets are yet to be confirmed. While showcased at Auto Expo 2023, there is no official announcement regarding its launch in India.
The new MG 4 is larger than its predecessor and even outpaces some mid-size SUVs in terms of dimensions. At 4,395mm in length, 1,842mm in width, and 1,551mm in height, it offers a spacious cabin relative to conventional hatchbacks. The design borrows elements from MG’s Cyberster sports EV, featuring sharper headlights, a revised bumper, and sleeker LED taillights.
The design and dimensions put in an interesting space—where Hyundai Creta and Volkswagen Virtus reside. Its shape is more cross-overish than pure hatchback and that might appeal to those who are looking for something different, something “racing-inspired”.
The MG 4 EV will likely be offered with multiple battery configurations, similar to its predecessor:
• 51kWh battery: Expected to deliver a WLTP range of around 350km.
• 64kWh battery: Likely to provide a range of up to 450km.
The vehicle gets a rear-mounted 163hp motor, slightly down from the previous entry-level MG 4's 170hp. Charging options may include AC and DC fast charging, with the ability to charge from 10-80% in under an hour using a fast charger.
While the interior has not been fully revealed, the previous model featured a minimalist dashboard, a floating touchscreen infotainment system, and a digital instrument cluster. Key features expected in the new model include:
• 10.25-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
• 360-degree camera system
• Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
• Climate control and connected car features
MG showcased the previous MG 4 at Auto Expo 2023, signaling an interest in evaluating the hatchback for India. Given that MG India has been focusing on SUVs and more affordable EVs, which could make the MG 4 a lower priority.
If launched in India, the MG 4 EV would compete with existing electric SUVs and crossovers rather than traditional hatchbacks. Key competitors include the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Tata Nexon EV Max. The MG ZS EV, priced between ₹23.07 lakh and ₹27.94 lakh, offers a 50.3kWh battery with a range of 419km. Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon EV Max, positioned more affordably at ₹18.34 lakh to ₹20.04 lakh, delivers a 40.5kWh battery with a range of 437km. Given its anticipated price point, the MG 4 EV would appeal to urban buyers looking for a premium electric hatchback rather than a budget-friendly EV option.
MG has already introduced the ZS EV and is preparing to expand its electric lineup. The brand has also hinted at localizing EV production and developing a more affordable EV range tailored for India. While the MG 4 fits within its global portfolio, MG may prioritize smaller, more affordable EVs in India to compete with Tata and Mahindra’s offerings.
The MG 4 EV brings a unique proposition with its larger-than-average hatchback size and decent performance. However, its premium pricing and positioning in the Indian market may limit its appeal. If MG decides to bring it to India, it could serve as a niche product rather than a volume driver. For now, its arrival remains speculative, with no official confirmation from the company.
