MG Motor revealed its latest electric SUV, the MG ES5, last year. This new model is a global offering and could replace the popular MG ZS EV in the Indian market in the upcoming years. There is, however, no official confirmation on this yet. In a recent video posted on the channel Telescope, we get to see the ES5 in detail. The host explains what the MG ES5 ( that's what it is called in China. European markets could have it under the name 'E5'- just like how the Mifa 9 became M9 in India) packs and how it drives.

A Fresh Look with Modern Styling

The MG ES5 stands out with its stylish new fascia and design. Its front end carries design elements seen on newer MG models like the MG 4 hatchback and maybe even the upcoming Cyberster. The sharp headlamps and sporty bumper give it a sleek, futuristic look. It is clearly designed to appeal to buyers who want something bold and modern.

Interior And Features

The cabin design is minimalistic and modern. It looks pleasant and modern inside. Almost everything looks new and fresh. The steering wheel, however, is borrowed from the MG 4. The ES5 is tech-laden and comes with features like a massive central touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, a column-mounted gear selector, a wireless charging pad, a panoramic sunroof and more.

Built on the New Nebula Platform

The ES5 crossover (or SUV) is based on MG’s new Nebula EV platform, developed by the parent company SAIC Motor Corporation (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). This scalable architecture is flexible and allows larger vehicles with longer wheelbases to be based on it. It also allows the use of future technologies like solid-state batteries, advanced electrical systems, and autonomous driving features.

This means the ES5 is not just an SUV for today— it is ready for what’s coming next in the electric mobility space. Compared to the outgoing MG ZS EV, the ES5 is bigger in almost every way. It measures 4.4 metres in length, 1.8 metres in width, and 1.6 metres in height. The wheelbase is 2,730 mm. That’s significantly longer than the ZS EV’s 2,585 mm wheelbase. The extra length should translate to a roomier cabin and more comfort, especially for rear-seat passengers. The host finds the rear seat to be roomy and comfortable.

Power and Performance

The ES5 comes with a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup. It delivers 167 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque. According to MG, it can hit 100 km/h from a standstill in 8 seconds, with a claimed top speed of 170 km/h. These make it an ideal fit for both city and highway use.

MG Motors offers the ES5 with three battery options in many global markets, although full details aren’t out yet. It remains to be seen if the carmaker would being these battery choices to the Indian market. The range varies between 425 km and 525 km per charge, depending on the battery pack.

With this kind of range, the ES5 is clearly built for more than just short city trips. It’s suitable for long-distance travel as well, adding further to its appeal. The host says that the ES5 drives well and handles like most contemporary compact SUVs.

Will It Come to India?

As of now, MG hasn’t officially confirmed whether the ES5 will be launched in India. The company has big plans for the Indian market, including new products and setting up a premium retail channel. The ES5 could fit in well with this strategy, especially if the ZS EV is eventually phased out and replaced by this product.

Given the growing demand for EVs in India, there’s a strong chance that MG might consider bringing the ES5 here in the near future.
