MG Windsor EV to Get 50.3 kWh Battery Pack Option in India: Launch In April

The newly launched electric vehicle, Windsor EV, from JSW MG Motor India has managed to gain a lot of popularity in the country. Presently, it is the highest-selling electric vehicle in India, beating the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and Punch EV. Now, it has been reported that MG will be offering the Windsor EV with a bigger 50 kWh battery pack option. This will help in further boosting its sales, and reportedly, it will be launched in April of this year.
As per reports, MG will introduce the bigger 50.3 kWh Windsor EV in India to make it even more competitive. Presently, the same battery pack is offered by MG in its compact SUV, the ZS EV. Once launched as an optional battery pack for the Windsor EV, it is expected to provide a range of 461 km on a single full charge.
Now, whether the 50.3 kWh battery pack variant of the Windsor EV will get the same electric motor with the current output or not has not been revealed. The ZS EV with the bigger battery pack comes equipped with an electric motor capable of producing 176 bhp and 280 Nm of torque.
Presently, the MG Windsor EV is only offered with a single battery pack option of a 38 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. It has a claimed range of 331 km on a single charge. As for the electric motor, it comes equipped with a 136 bhp and 200 Nm-producing unit, which powers the front wheels.
The current 38 kWh battery pack can be charged from 0% to 80% in 55 minutes using a 50 kW DC charger. Also, it takes 6.5 to 7.4 hours to charge from 0% to 100% using an AC charger. On the other hand, the 50.3 kWh battery pack can be charged from 0% to 80% in just 46 minutes. A full charge will take around 16 hours using an AC charger.
Presently, the MG Windsor EV with the 38 kWh battery pack included is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 15.99 lakh. As for the 50.3 kWh battery pack, it is believed that it will command a price premium of Rs 1-1.5 lakh over the existing pricing. Now, whether the bigger battery pack will be offered with all three variants of the Windsor EV or not has not been revealed.
The Windsor EV has helped MG become a much bigger player in the EV market. Currently, MG holds a 21 percent market share in India. Tata Motors, which used to have a 73 percent share, is now down to 62 percent. As for the sales figures, MG has announced that since the beginning, it has managed to produce 15,000 units of the Windsor EV at its production facility in Halol, Gujarat.
MG also announced that the 10,000-unit sales mark was achieved in the first three months of the Windsor EV’s launch. As for last month's sales, MG managed to dispatch a total of 3,277 units of the Windsor EV. This EV's sales have contributed to 49 percent of the brand’s total sales. Now, with the launch of the bigger battery pack option, sales will increase further.
