MG Windsor 50 kWh Just Weeks Away From Launch: 350 Kms Real World Range

MG Motor India has delivered a hit with the Windsor EV. The electric CUV ( Crossover Utility Vehicle) as MG calls it, is in high demand. It has overtaken rivals like the Tata Nexon EV in sales. The outgoing model comes with a 38 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack. However, a larger 50 kWh unit is also expected to launch soon. We have now learnt from knowledgable sources that the launch could happen towards the end of this month (April 2025). Weeks away from it hitting the roads, let's see what changes would the 50 kWh version of the Windsor pack...
The upgraded battery is likely to be the same unit used in the MG ZS EV, and it could push Windsor’s range to 461 km on a full charge. That’s a big step forward from the current version's 331 km. The range boost will greatly improve its highway and long-distance usability.
While the brand hasn’t confirmed if this new variant will use the same motor as the ZS EV, expectations are high. In the ZS EV, the 50.3 kWh pack powers a motor that churns out 176 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. By comparison, the current Windsor EV runs on a 136 bhp, 200 Nm motor.
The Windsor EV is underpinned by MG's new-age Pure Electric platform. This is so designed as to support several battery sizes and body styles. Thus, fitting the larger unit in would not be much of an issue.
In fact, the 50 kWh version is already on sale in markets like Indonesia, where it is sold with the name Wuling Cloud EV. Many including us were surprised when JSW MG Motor India skimped on the battery size of the India-spec. But seems like the move was to pull off a disruptive pricing.
Charging times are also set to improve with the larger battery pack in place. The 50.3 kWh version will be able to charge from 0% to 80% in just 46 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. A full charge using a standard AC charger could take about 16 hours. In contrast, the current 38 kWh model takes around 55 minutes for 0-80% DC charging and 6.5 to 7.4 hours for a full AC charge.
At present, the MG Windsor EV is priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹16 lakh (ex-showroom). The upcoming 50.3 kWh version is expected to come at a premium of around ₹1–1.5 lakh. MG also offers a Battery As A Subscription (BaaS) model of ownership on the Windsor and the same is likely to continue on the 50 kWh version.
It remains to be seen whether this new battery option will be available across all three variants or be limited to select trims alone.
The Windsor EV has played a major role in expanding MG’s presence in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market. MG now holds a 21% market share, while Tata Motors has dropped from 73% to 62%.
As of March, MG had produced over 15,000 units of the Windsor EV at its Halol facility in Gujarat. Notably, the brand sold 10,000 units within the first three months of launch. As confirmed by recent numbers, the carmaker dispatched 3,277 units in a single month. The Windsor alone forms 49% of MG’s total car sales.
With the introduction of a larger battery and longer range promises, MG aims to make the Windsor EV even more attractive to Indian buyers. The added value is expected to strengthen MG’s position in the EV space and further reduce the gap with long-time leader Tata Motors.
