Tata Motors had been leading the EV game until when Morris Garages (MG) pushed them to the second spot with the Windsor EV. MG was late to the party as the Windsor was launched only in September 2024. Its sales, however, soared in no time. Now, when we look at the FY25 EV sales figures, the Windsor takes the top spot!

In the last financial year, MG posted sales of 19,394 units of the Windsor EV. Tata Punch EV takes the second spot with 17,966 units sold. Tiago EV ranks third, posting sales of 17,145 units. Tata Nexon EV, which was once hailed as the crown-bearer among electric SUVs, managed to sell just 13,978 units. Tata Curvv's sales stood much lower, at 7534 units.

Clearly, the Windsor EV has emerged to be the best-selling electric car in India. It should be noted that these numbers are inclusive of both the Windsor EV and Windsor PRO. The latter is the long-range variant which was launched in May this year. At present, the Windsor EV is priced in the range of Rs 13.99 lakh to 18.31 lakh (for the PRO variant), ex-showroom.

MG also offers the Battery As A Subscription (BaaS) model of ownership as well. It has helped in bringing down the upfront cost and has thus made the vehicle accessible to more people.

Why Is MG Windsor Selling So Well?

The short answer would be that it offers a sweet balance between price, value, features, technology and practicality.

The Windsor is a crossover-styled EV. Its unique design also generates a lot of room inside. It further comes packed with features and seats that enhance occupant comfort. This 'no compromise' nature in keeping people comfortable inside, has also contributed to its acceptance. For someone looking for a spacious, comfortable EV, it makes a lot of sense. It is hard to find another vehicle that offers the same amount of room and features at this price point.

The range-topping Windsor EV (the PRO) offers a lot of features and equipment. The company has, however, distributed features and tech carefully among lower variants- this seems to have contributed to its popularity as well. While the lower variants get all the necessary equipment, the PRO comes with Level 2 ADAS and Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging.

The powertrain is another reason. All variants come powered by an electric motor that sits on the front axle. It is capable of producing 136 hp and 200 Nm of torque. MG offers two battery sizes on the Windsor EV. The standard version gets a 38 kWh unit that is claimed to deliver a range of 332 km per charge, while the PRO has a 52.9 kWh battery with Prismatic cells. The larger unit claims a range of 449 km per charge!

The vehicle also offers features like a large panoramic sunroof, connected car suite, ADAS, a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen, 9-speaker Infinity audio and more- which are greatly appreciated by people these days.

The cabin design and materials and trims have an air of premiumness to them, which is appreciated by most. The interior is pleasant and feels liveable.

Another strong point on the Windsor is its safety suite. The manufacturer has equipped it well on this front. It comes with six airbags, ESP, Hill-Start Assist Control, Hill Descent Control, LED cornering lights, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, an electronic parking brake with auto hold and all-wheel disc brakes.
