MG Motor’s Windsor electric crossover has continued its run as the country’s highest-selling EV, clocking 4,511 units in August 2025. This marks the eleventh month in a row where the Windsor has held the number one spot, consolidating its lead in a segment that has become increasingly competitive over the past year.

A Record August

The August tally of 4,511 units represents the Windsor’s strongest month so far. Cumulative sales since launch have now crossed 41,000 units, placing it well ahead of rivals in the four-wheeler EV space. MG has been able to consistently deliver volumes month after month, something that even established players in the compact and mid-size SUV category have found challenging.

The Windsor’s sales have been strong across metro cities and Tier 2 markets alike, helped by a wide dealer presence and adequate supply. Unlike many other EV models, where waiting periods can extend into weeks, MG has managed to keep Windsor deliveries steady, which has encouraged more buyers to take the plunge.

Features That Matter

The Windsor is not marketed as a premium SUV but as a practical and family-friendly crossover. Its design borrows from conventional SUV styling cues, which helps it appeal to buyers transitioning from petrol or diesel models. The cabin layout focuses on space and comfort, with “Aero Lounge” seats that can recline deeply and a flat floor made possible by the EV platform.

On the technology front, a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen and connected features like remote climate control, charging status updates and voice commands have been well received. Power output stands at 100 kW with 200 Nm of torque, adequate for city and highway use.

Most significant is the pricing structure. MG introduced the Windsor with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, allowing buyers to purchase the car at a lower upfront cost of about ₹9.99 lakh while paying a usage-based fee for the battery, around ₹3.9 per km. This lowered the entry barrier, making the Windsor more accessible than rivals with traditional purchase models.

Why the Windsor Leads

The Windsor’s success comes from balancing affordability with usability. Buyers are not necessarily looking for high performance but rather range predictability, cabin comfort and manageable costs. The Windsor delivers a driving range that meets typical daily and weekly usage patterns without forcing frequent charging stops.

MG has also kept the design familiar. Many rivals have chosen futuristic styling, which can put off mainstream buyers. By keeping the Windsor close to a traditional SUV look, MG makes it easier for first-time EV owners to adopt without hesitation.

Service support has played a role too. MG has set up a network of workshops trained to handle EV components, and warranty packages cover both the car and battery, reducing long-term ownership worries.

Staying Ahead of Competition

The Windsor’s main rivals include the Tata Nexon EV, Tiago EV and recently launched midsize EVs such as the Mahindra XUV400 and Citroën ëC3. While these cars have their own strengths, none has matched Windsor’s consistency in sales. For example, the Nexon EV continues to sell well but has seen fluctuations depending on updates and variant launches.

The Windsor’s volume lead has made it the default choice for many families considering an EV crossover. Its BaaS model, in particular, has been unique in making EV adoption financially easier.

Will It Continue To Lead?

With eleven months at the top, the Windsor is now not just a new entrant but an established player. The upcoming festive season will test whether MG can maintain this momentum, especially with new launches expected from Maruti and Tata.

Still, MG’s achievement is notable. In a market where EV sales remain a fraction of total car sales, the Windsor has proven that consistent demand exists when the right combination of price, features and availability is offered. For buyers weighing an EV purchase in 2025, the Windsor remains a model hard to overlook.
